Disney has quickly become the movie studio masters of employing de-aging technology, and here are all the movies they've used it in so far. Whether they be of the Marvel Studios, Star Wars, or other varieties, Disney movies tend to feature many iconic villains that strike fear in the hearts of the characters within their universes. For the actors that play them back in the real world, though, the ultimate villain is father time. Everyone gets old, and while many do it gracefully, there's no opting out of it.

Thankfully though, at least onscreen, recent years have seen Hollywood effects wizards rapidly innovate when it comes to ways of digitally de-aging movie stars. Many studios and filmmakers have used this to varying effects. One of the more notable examples is Martin Scorsese's The Irishman, which used computers to de-age the appearances of stars Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, and Joe Pesci. Overall though, Disney is arguably the foremost practitioner of this new odd art.

While it's true that badly done de-aging can hurt the immersion most people enjoy experiencing when watching a film, de-aging that's pulled off well can leave viewers, especially those who vividly remember what an actor looked like decades ago, awestruck at the recreation. With that in mind, here are all the movies Disney has employed de-aging technology in so far, a club that will undoubtedly continue to grow.

Tron: Legacy (2010)

De-aged Jeff Bridges in Tron Legacy

2010's Tron: Legacy, the long-awaited sequel to Disney's 1982 sci-fi/fantasy classic Tron, was the first release from the studio to employ de-aging techniques. Sadly, it became an infamous example of them not working, as the de-aged version of Jeff Bridges featured looks like something that would be more at home in a PS3 game than on the big screen.

Ant-Man (2015)

Michael Douglas De-Aged in Ant-Man

Thankfully, Disney's second attempt at de-aging on film in the MCU's Ant-Man turned out much better, as pictured above. In a flashback scene set decades prior to the rest of the story, a young Hank Pym is shown leaving SHIELD due to their undisclosed attempts at replicating his shrinking tech. The result is a pretty close recreation of a Wall Street-era Michael Douglas.

Captain America: Civil War (2016)

De aged Robert Downey Jr in Civil War

Released one year after Ant-Man, Captain America: Civil War saw Disney and Marvel de-age Robert Downey Jr. back to his 1980s self circa films like Weird Science and Less Than Zero as part of a virtual recreation of Tony Stark's last memory of his parents before their deaths. It looks similar in quality to Douglas' de-aging in Ant-Man, but perhaps a bit better overall.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016)

Princess-Leia-Rogue-One

Rogue One is an odd case among this bunch, as while many often think of what it does as de-aging, it technically isn't. Instead of attempting to de-age Carrie Fisher - who would sadly pass away not long after release - Rogue One used a body double and digitally replaced her face and voice with that of Fisher's for the appearance of young Princess Leia. The same techniques were also used to resurrect Grand Moff Tarkin, even though actor Peter Cushing passed away all the way back in 1994.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017)

Young Kurt Russell as Ego driving in Guardians of the Galaxy vol 2

Disney and Marvel Studios, more specifically, continued to establish themselves as the go-to provider of movie de-aging with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, released a year after Civil War. In the James Gunn-directed sequel, a flashback shows Ego's whirlwind romance with Peter Quill's human mother in the 1980s and features actor Kurt Russell de-aged to reflect the time passage.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017)

Young Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean 5

Disney actually employed de-aging effects in two big blockbuster releases during 2017, the other coming in Pirates of the Caribbean 5, subtitled Dead Men Tell No Tales. As usual, Johnny Depp starred as Captain Jack Sparrow, with a flashback sequence allowing fans to finally get a look at Jack in his younger days as a swashbuckler via a de-aged version of Depp.

Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018)

Michelle Pfeiffer as young Janet van Dyne in Ant-Man and The Wasp

The 2018 sequel Ant-Man and the Wasp once again saw Disney and Marvel de-age Michael Douglas to portray a young Hank Pym, but this time his wife Janet Van Dyne (Michelle Pfeiffer) got in on the de-aging fun. This happens as part of a flashback showing how an Ant-Man and Wasp mission went bad, leaving Janet trapped in the Quantum Realm and Hope without a mother.

Captain Marvel (2019)

Nick Fury Captain Marvel Pager

Captain Marvel, an MCU film set back in the 1990s, saw Disney and Marvel take on their biggest de-aging challenge to date, rolling the clock back two decades-plus on both Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) for the entire running time. The results turned out great, with the change being almost entirely seamless.

Avengers: Endgame (2019)

De-Aged Stan Lee in Avengers Endgame

Avengers: Endgame probably isn't the first movie Disney and Marvel fans think of when they hear the word de-aging, but it actually featured quite a bit of it, albeit of an often subtler nature. All the original Avengers - outside of Hulk, of course - were de-aged slightly for new scenes taking place in 2012 during the time heist. Once Tony and Steve head back to the 1970s to obtain more Pym particles, a de-aged Douglas is once again seen as Hank Pym, with John Slattery's Howard Stark also made to look younger. Even Marvel icon Stan Lee was de-aged for his requisite cameo.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (2019)

Young Luke with Green Lightsaber in Star Wars The Rise of Skywalker

De-aging officially made its way into the Star Wars franchise with The Rise of Skywalker, which concluded the nine-movie space opera saga that began in 1977. The Rise of Skywalker featured a flashback scene of Luke training his sister Leia in the ways of the Jedi. The scene saw Mark Hamill de-aged to play young Luke, but Billie Lourd, daughter of the late Carrie Fisher, played young Leia in a heartwarming casting choice.

Black Widow (2021)

Black Widow Alexei Melina de-aged characters

Black Widow, Disney's most recent Marvel Studios theatrical release, began its story with a flashback to decades prior, showing the odd upbringing of Natasha Romanoff and her "sister" Yelena. Playing their parents were Russian spies Alexei (David Harbour) and Melina (Rachel Weisz), and both actors were de-aged quite convincingly for the entire sequence.

Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)

Doctor Octopus standing on a building in Spider-Man 2

While Spider-Man: No Way Home is yet to come and will close out 2021 for Disney and Marvel Studios, no less than Alfred Molina himself has said that he'll be de-aged to 2004 for his return as Doc Ock in the new film. It still remains to be seen how Otto Octavius will come back since he died in Spider-Man 2, but the multiverse effectively makes anything possible.
