Actor Dafne Keen recently shared her opinion on Disney movies and how they affect girls. Though Keen is only 15 years old, she's already an established performer. The actor got her start with a recurring role in The Refugees, where she played Ana "Ani" Cruz Oliver. However, her breakout performance came in 2017's Logan. Keen starred alongside Hugh Jackman in the award-winning film. She played Laura, a mutant and clone of Wolverine. Keen's character also showed up earlier this year in The New Mutants, though via archive footage.

Since 2019, Keen has starred in His Dark Materials. The BBC One/HBO series is based on the Philip Pullman novels of the same name. Keen plays Lyra, the show's leading character. His Dark Materials season 1 received generally positive reviews. Season 2 premiered in November and will conclude later this month.

Speaking with Elle about her role on the show, as well as the other fully-formed characters she's played before, conversation turned to female heroes of the past. Keen explained:

Disney movies, if you watch them back, were extremely bad for a girl to see, even the ones which aren't so old. They’re dangerous because you can't place your finger on what's really wrong. I think we've got a long way to go.

Keen makes a fair point, one that's been argued by many before. Though she doesn't specifically mention Disney princess movies, it seems likely that's what she's talking about, especially since they're the ones most associated with the company. Older films like Snow White and the Seven DwarfsCinderella, and Beauty and the Beast are certainly problematic for their prioritizing of romantic relationships above all else. However, Keen's comment about "ones which aren't so old" is especially interesting, as Disney has made an effort to set aside love interests with characters like Moana and Frozen's Elsa.

Additionally, Keen's assessment of why Disney movies can be dangerous makes a lot of sense. They're a regular part of many kids' childhoods, which means their ideologies can be absorbed unconsciously. This can impact one's viewpoint throughout life. Though Disney movies are enormously popular for a reason, Keen's argument is well-reasoned and certainly worth discussing.

It's also worth noting it's a somewhat risky topic for her to bring up. In the same interview, Keen talked about the possibility of playing Laura again in a future X-Men film. Thanks to Disney's purchase of 21st Century Fox, it now has the rights to the X-Men characters and will decide on any more movies. Considering the popularity of Keen's Logan character, it seems unlikely the actor's comments will have an impact. However, they do show her willingness to stand up for what matters to her, regardless of how it may be perceived.
