There are currently over 40 playable characters in Disney Mirrorverse, and more will be released in future updates. Each character, referred to as a Guardian, has a specific class, special abilities, talents, and star ratings that can help determine when to use them in combat. Encounters have different requirements and enemy types, so having a large number of available Guardians makes it easier to progress and unlock additional high-tier characters.

Guardians are split into four different classes, which are melee, ranged, tank, and support. Each class has a general fighting style, but every Guardian has different light, heavy and special attacks to use in combat encounters. After the first few story missions, the option to use three Guardians per match will become available. In each encounter, one Guardian is controlled by the player, and the other two fight automatically. The active Disney Mirrorverse classic character can be swapped at any time during an encounter.

Some combat encounters require a specific character class, or they set other parameters that affect which Guardians can be used. Events may exclude certain characters from a team or include bonus one-on-one encounters that can only be completed with a specific Guardian. For example, A Frosty Unraveling is an event that's currently ongoing and requires Elsa and Woody for bonus encounters. New Guardians can be unlocked by using different crystals, some of which can be earned for free by completing missions and other activities in Disney Mirrorverse.

Every Guardian is redesigned to fit into their warrior role, but they still maintain some of their familiar characteristics. For example, Rapunzel's long hair is tied around her, and she uses a frying pan as her melee weapon. Each character has a class based on their movie counterpart or the film's lore, such as Aladdin in Disney Mirrorverse, who's a melee fighter. Some characters within a class can reach higher power levels than others regardless of star rating, which is why Baloo is a better tank character than Sulley. There are currently 45 Guardians to unlock, but many popular characters are still missing, so there are plenty more that could be introduced in future updates.
