Although it hasn't released yet, Disney's upcoming card game Lorcana is already set to avoid one of the Pokémon Trading Card Game's biggest issues. The first cards from Disney's TCG Lorcana were officially announced at D23 earlier this month to much excitement, with several famous characters being shown off. Now, a new interview has revealed Lorcana cards will be released in a way that prioritizes fans.

In Disney's Lorcana, players take on the role of an Ilumineer whose abilities allow for them to channel different Disney characters in battle. This premise sets the stage for how decks will function, with each character possessing specific abilities to aid in a fight. So far seven cards from Lorcana have been revealed: Elsa, Captain Hook, Stitch, Robin Hood, Maleficent, Cruella de Vil, and a Mickey Mouse card that sports a special vintage Mickey from the Brave Little Tailor movie. The game is meant to be more approchable to players than some card games, although the mechanics of some cards do bear resemblance to card games like Hearthstone and Magic the Gathering.

A new IGN interview with Lorcana's co-designer and brand manager Ryan Miller revealed one of the most important ways the upcoming Disney game plans to prioritize fans: never making cards exclusive to cons or events. Some concerns had been raised about this after D23 attendees could acquire special foil versions of the recently announced cards, but Miller stated that while the cards have a different appearance, they will function no differently than the regular versions of the cards. On the subject, Miller stated that: "I don’t like to say ‘never’ when working on a trading card game, but here I go: We’ll never do a promo card or collection that you can’t also get out of the regular product."

Disney Lorcana Promo Cards News Is Great For Tired Pokémon TCG Fans

This Lorcana news is bound to be a breath of fresh air for many long-time card game players, particularly fans of Pokémon TCG. The game has been around for decades, and in that time there have been many incredibly rare cards it's been difficult for more casual fans to get their hands on. Whether it's rare Pokémon TCG cards only available at tournaments or special releases at conventions, there are some cards that are truly impossible for many players to acquire. This makes the game an uneven playing field for fans who aren't able to acquire powerful rare cards, and can even put some off the game altogether after a string of disappointments over unavailable cards.

As a result, there's also an incredibly expensive market for many Pokémon TCG cards as well. While Disney's Lorcana won't be cheap by any means, with the starter set of seven cards coming in at $49.95, by comparison that's a much more reasonable rate than that of many Pokémon cards, which can be expensive. This news about Disney Lorcana is great news for any fan of card games, but will likely be particularly exciting for Pokémon TCG players who are tired of exclusive cards.
