Quick Links
With so many areas to explore in Disney Dreamlight Valley, it's nice to have a critter companion at one's side. Dreamlight Valley currently offers seven different species of critters for the player to befriend, with an eighth already confirmed but yet to be added to the game.
Each of these species has different color variations that are sometimes only available at certain times of the day. Players can find the list of critters currently available to to-be available in the 'Critters' part of their Collection.
To befriend a critter players must feed that specific variant two separate times. While players do not need to feed the critter their favorite food, doing so will result in a reward from the critter, usually a Dreamlight Valley dream shard or a motif. Four variants of each critter type show up per day in the game for between six and 24 hours, so players will have to be vigilant in order to get the critter they are looking for. Critters also need to be approached in different ways in order to be fed. Once a critter variant has been fed, the player will not be able to approach them again that day.

How To Befriend Sunbirds (& When They Appear)
Sunbirds in Disney Dreamlight Valley can be found flitting around in the air in different areas of the Plateau. They are some of the easiest critters to approach, as the player just needs to walk up to the sunbird and choose the 'approach' action. Once the players give the sunbird something to eat, the bird will still be seen flying around the plateau but will be unapproachable. There are five variants of sunbirds: Emerald, Golden, Orchid, Red, and Turquoise.

Squirrels can be seen around the Plaza and are practically fearless as they approach the player. There are five varieties of squirrels: Black, Classic, Gray, Red, and White. Note that a squirrel's favorite food, peanuts, is only available after completing the Dreamlight Valley quest "Remy's Recipe Book".

Crocodiles (& When They Appear)
The crocodiles in Disney Dreamlight Valley are a bit more difficult to approach and require some patience and observation from the player. As the player walked toward a crocodile, they need to watch for it to raise its head up and look around. As soon as it raises its head up, the player needs to stop moving. Once it lowers its head closer to the ground, the player can take a few steps forward, stopping again when the crocodile raises its head again. When the player gets close enough, the 'approach' option will be available and the crocodile will crouch on the ground and wag its tail. There are six variants of crocodiles in Dreamlight Valley: Blue, Classic, Golden, Pink, Red, and White.

How To Befriend Rabbits (& When They Appear)
The rabbits in Dreamlight Valley are a playful bunch and like to play a game of tag with the player before being approachable. Once a player sees a rabbit, they must walk up to it, where it will proceed to run a short distance away. Players only need to follow the rabbit and repeat the process two more times before the rabbit can be approached and fed. There are five variants of rabbits in Dreamlight Valley: Black, Brown, Calico, Classic, and White.

Sea Turtles In Dreamlight Valley (& When They Appear)
The sea turtles of Dreamlight Valley are a timid bunch. When players start to approach them, they will shrink back into their shells. Not to worry though, once a player sees this, they just need to stop moving until the turtle pops its head back out, letting the player approach. Note that it is easier for players to get a sea turtle's favorite food if they have the fishing rod in Dreamlight Valley. There are five variations of sea turtles in Dreamlight Valley: Black, Brown, Classic, Purple, and White.

How To Befriend Raccoons (& When They Appear)
Like the crocodiles, the raccoons of Dreamlight Valley are a very cautious bunch. Players must carefully approach the raccoons, only stepping toward them when their heads are closer to the ground, as opposed to standing up straight and looking around. Once players get close enough, they will be able to approach the raccoon to feed it. There are five variations of raccoons in Dreamlight Valley: Black, Blue, Classic, Red, and White.

The critters in Disney Dreamlight Valley offer a cute and kind companion for the player as they farm, explore, and restore the valley while befriending all of Dreamlight Valley's characters. Players can easily change their critter companion of choice once they are unlocked using the 'Wardrobe' function. It has yet to be announced when ravens will be introduced to the game; however, the game's official release is not until 2023.
