The creator of The Simpsons, Matt Groening's latest accomplishment, Disenchantment, turned out to be a smash hit with Netflix audiences. Critics withheld most of their praise, however, claiming that the series was starting to get "unfocused," but it doesn't change the fact that it remains incredibly enjoyable.

The adventures of an alcoholic princess, her irritating Elf friend, and an inscrutable (but tiny) demon from Hell, are as exciting as they are emotional. In fact, many of the characters in addition to the three main protagonists have been granted complex and poignant backstories, so the narrative feels quite natural for its bizarre and often illogical setting. They aren't always good, though, which can be a problem.

Bean — No Sense Of Responsibility

Bean and Elfo.

Bean's issue is that she has been handed everything on a silver platter since birth — the princess of a semi-prosperous kingdom, she has never wanted for anything (except freedom), and almost always gets out of sticky situations without any problem.

Nearly nobody else in Dreamland has as much audacity as she does, let alone allow themselves to indulge in the dangerous acts she's used to. She didn't want to marry some random prince from Bentwood, which is understandable, but her position comes with a lot of responsibility.

Dagmar — Her Plans For Her Daughter

Dagmar and Bean.

To be perfectly honest, what Dagmar wants is still unclear. Does she want to take over Dreamland? She has had a number of chances to strike if that's the case. Also, what is this ancient prophecy that she keeps talking about? And how is Bean involved with the whole thing?

Regardless, it's still not grounds for Dagmar to force her into doing her ridiculous bidding, which only gets all the more horrible at the end of the latest season when she basically hands her daughter over as a bridge to a stranger.

Elfo — Can Be Rather Annoying

Elfo looking concerned in Disenchantment.

Elfo is sweet, charming, compassionate, but only when he wants to be. The rest of the time, he goes on to drone and moan about everything under the sun, exhausting both Bean and Luci.

While Luci often plays a lot of pranks on the elf, based on the latter's attitude, it feels like he deserves it (to a point, anyway). The most awful thing about Elfo is his nasally, grating voice: far more horrible than anything he could actually say.

Zøg — Absent Father

Zog and Oona

King Zøg isn't the worst father in television history, but he's far from making the top ten. He cares about Bean and Derek, but is so tightly wound up in himself (and his love for his petrified ex-wife, Dagmar) that he regularly ignores his children.

Especially when they are at their most vulnerable. In fact, it is Zøg's lack of paternal care that is the direct cause of Bean's rebellious behavior, but at least he apologizes to her for his mistakes.

Luci — Can't Stop His Demonic Habits

Luci

Luci has permanently forsaken the pleasures of being a Hell demon when he chooses to side with Bean and Elfo. He doesn't even care so much about being kicked out of his home, which is great, except when he starts pranking and teasing the people around him.

For the most part, it's Elfo that has to bear the brunt of Luci's taunts, but the demon's actions affect Bean, Zøg, and others, as well. That being said, it must be noted that he is a lot better now than he was earlier.

Oona — Slithers Everywhere

Oona

Oona is initially depicted as this ice-cold evil queen, but Bean soon learns (to her embarrassment) that her stepmom doesn't want to do anything evil to her, or her family. On the contrary, she herself feels trapped in an unwanted marriage, and her escape to the open seas is one of the high points in her life.

The one thing about Oona that bothers everyone is the fact that she slithers all over the place, and hangs upside down while sleeping. Technically not bad, except when it freaks people out.

Bunty — Can't Stand Up For Herself

Bunty and Bean

Bunty, Princess Bean's chambermaid, is an adorable person (until it is revealed that she keeps all of her anger about her mistreatment to herself, and takes it out on her innocent family half the time).

She lets the royal household do whatever they want to her, such as Bean riding on her back like she's a horse, or overworking to the point of exhaustion. It's not fair to Bunty, but she honestly should say something. It's not like Bean would ever be able to make her own bed, so firing her is out of the question.

Odval — Very Suspicious

Disenchantment Odval Handles A Steamland Pistol

Odval's real plans are unclear, but he generally tries to be shady. For one thing, he attempts to have Bean "disposed of" by having Derek punish her for an accident by being burned at the stake. She survives, but then he doesn't really want to kill her again?

Similarly, he discusses a prophecy about the alphabetical kings of Dreamland, all the while intending to murder Zøg, but once again, the failure of his plot has no serious effect on him whatsoever. Does Odval even know what he wants?

Sorcerio — Worst Court Mage Ever

Sorcerio

Sorcerio's idea of creating a potion of youth from Elfo's blood is a miserable misstep, but that's just the tip of the iceberg. He arrogantly rejects the possibility of science, but at the same time, displays little to no aptitude for magic.

When Bean goes to the Kingdom of Bentwood, the court wizard there states that Sorcerio is one of the few members of his profession incapable of the most basic charms or spells. Good thing he has Odval to vouch for him, then.

Derek — Almost Kills His Sister

Derek and Bean

Prince Derek's first ruling as de facto monarch of Dreamland is to sentence Tiabeanie to death, clearly under Odval's insistence. He may not have actually placed the torch at the pyre, but he says nothing when Odval takes on the task himself.

Derek does feel extremely disappointed in himself, but that can't bring his sister back, can it? Well, at least if Dagmar had not made her trøgs save her daughter from the stake.
