The trailer for Disenchantment season 3 reveals a January release date and teases a return to Steamland, as well as new characters. The Netflix adult animated series was created by Matt Groening, best known for The Simpsons and Futurama. The series follows the adventures of Princess Bean (Abbi Jacobson), a hard-drinking disaffected princess who continually rebels against her destiny. Along for the ride are her personal demon, Luci (Eric Andre), and Elfo (Nat Faxon), a naive young Elf from the local woods.
Disenchantment hasn't been as big a hit for Groening as his Fox animated shows, though it does contain all of his trademark style and humor. The visual gags, in particular, seem pulled straight from his mind, and the voice cast is strong. Critics called season 2 "aimless," though, and there is hope season 3 will be able to resolve some of the show's plotlines with a bit more certainty and perhaps add in a few more solid laughs. The show is due to pick up where season 2 left off, with the trio of Bean, Luci, and Elfo stuck in a catacomb surrounded by the subterranean Trogs and Bean's mother, Dagmar (Sharon Horgan).
Now, the trailer for season 3 has been released via IGN, revealing the next batch of 10 episodes will debut on Netflix on January 15. As is typical for Netflix, all 10 episodes will be released at the same time, allowing fans to binge-watch the entire season in one go. The trailer also shows Princess Bean escaping back to Steamland, introduced in season 2, episode 9 "The Electric Princess." There she meets a new character, voiced by British comic actor Richard Ayoade, who wants Steamland and Dreamland to form an alliance. Check out the trailer below:
The return to Steamland is a sign Groening, and the rest of the creative team on Disenchantment felt like the show needed to expand its universe. Season 3 is set to spend a lot of time there, based on this trailer, and hopefully, the newly introduced characters don't confuse the plot even more. The addition of Ayoade, alongside fellow IT Crowd stars Matt Berry and Noel Fielding, is sure to be welcomed by fans, though, and is his second major series appearance of the past year, after voicing Zero in The Mandalorian.
Whether the renewed focus on Steamland and the addition of new characters will help the show improve remains to be seen. Clearly, Netflix believes it has value to add to their massive library, though if season 3 struggles to find its feet as season 2 did, there's more of a chance of Disenchantment getting canceled. Could this be the last hurrah for the animated show? Fans will have to tune in on January 15 to find out.
