Warning: This article contains spoilers for Disenchanted.

Giselle’s transformation into a fairy-tale villain in Disenchanted has a connection to an obscure Disney live-action sequel. The highly anticipated sequel to Enchanted follows in its predecessor’s footsteps by filling the film with Easter eggs from Disney Princess films to other Disney classics. One that may have gone under the radar with audiences is the method by which Giselle becomes more and more of a villain.

Giselle begins to take on the traits of a stereotypical fairy-tale stepmother every time she hears the bells chime from the town clock tower. The main character who acts kind transitioning into a villain due to chimes from a clock tower is a Disenchanted Easter egg because the same thing happens to Cruella in 102 Dalmatians, the sequel to the live-action adaption of 101 Dalmatians. In 102 Dalmatians, Cruella has gone through a new therapy that “cured” her of her villainous impulses. After trying to lead a good and normal life, when she hears the loud chimes of Big Ben, she snaps out of her good ways and becomes a villain once more.

Why Giselle Becomes More Villainous When A Clock Tower Chimes In Disenchanted

The rules of the wishing wand Giselle used to create a fairy-tale life state that at the last stroke of midnight, her wish and all the consequences will become permanent, meaning she will remain an evil stepmother forever. As the day goes on, and the clock tower chimes a new time of day, Giselle takes on a new personality trait of a wicked stepmother. First is vanity, then cruelty, then finally ambition. New Disenchanted character Malvina Monroe unknowingly thwarts Giselle’s attempts to break the spell by stealing the wand and so every time the clock tower bells ring, Giselle becomes vain by buying a lot of dresses, cruel by mistreating Morgan, and ambitious by plotting to take over Monroeville.

Does Disenchanted Giselle Become A Real Villain Like Cruella?

Cruella yelling in 102 Dalmatians

When Cruella becomes a villain again in 102 Dalmatians, she attempts once again to get her dalmatian puppy dog coat. To achieve this means kidnappings and attempting to murder dogs, framing an innocent man, and imprisoning her parole officer. Giselle as a villain also does some terrible things, such as treating Morgan horribly and attempting to kill Malvina in a magic battle. Even Giselle’s wish for a fairy-tale life is draining all the life and magic out of Andalasia.

However, Giselle is not a real villain, like Cruella, for two reasons. One is seen in the Disenchanted movie ending, as when Morgan restores Giselle’s memories, and she instantly knows what she has done is wrong. Second is that Giselle is cursed and so is not in her right mind. Giselle never meant to hurt anyone and was able to fix everything and put the world back to normal, while Cruella became who she truly was and took pleasure in being cruel to people.

102 Dalmatians is not a well-known sequel, as it is not part of the current live-action Disney films line-up and wasn’t a big hit when it was released. With this in mind, it’s possible that the connection between Cruella and Giselle becoming villains the same way was a complete coincidence. However, seeing how intricate and numerous the Easter eggs were in Disenchanted, this more likely was intentional and was a clever way to tie Giselle’s evil turn to one of Disney’s greatest villains.
