2016 has been yet another busy year for Max Landis, the screenwriter who not only was on the receiving end of some big deals in the film industry, but also had the premiere of two original TV series as well. The first, Channel Zero, which he co-created with Nick Antosca, is one of the more shocking and provocative additions to the growing number of anthology series populating the TV landscape these days. The second, BBC America's Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency, is notable not only because of Landis' involvement but because it also marks the latest live-action adaptation of a Douglas Adams property to come along in the past few years.
Starring Elijah Wood as Todd and Samuel Barnett as the titular holistic detective, the series has been welcomed with mostly average to positive reviews from both critics and fans alike, with some being more receptive to the show's many changes from its source material than others. If you're a fan of this new take on Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency though, it looks like you won't have to worry about saying goodbye too soon.
BBC America has officially announced that Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency will be returning for a second season on the network. In addition, and unlike this season's 8-episode run, the second season will be 10-episodes long and will premiere sometime next year. Meanwhile, Dirk Gently will air its season 1 finale on December 10th.
Set in the strange world of Douglas Adams' original novels, Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency tells its own tale; following Barnett's holistic detective when he teams up with a down-on-his-luck former hotel bellhop, Todd (Wood), as the two work together to try and uncover the truth behind one long, convoluted mystery each season. Along the way, the duo may cross paths with a number of absurd and sometimes, even violent, characters who in some way or another, all connect back to Dirk's case, even if he himself might not realize how just yet.
In terms of structure and plotting alone, Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency has emerged as one of the more ambitious and strange new additions to the television lineup this year. Mostly, this is due to its inherent and seemingly nonsensical random nature, asking viewers to trust the show when it says that all of the characters, violence, and strange paranormal moments will somehow connect back to the central murder mystery that brought Todd and Dirk together in the first place. So far, most of Dirk Gently has been dedicated to setting up all of the connections, rather than bringing them together or explaining them. How the series goes about living up to that promise at the end of this season, could greatly affect fan excitement or opinion of the series going into a second season next year.
Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency continues next Saturday with ‘Fix Everything’ @9pm on BBC America.
