By nature of their job, a director works behind the camera. The director is the unseen captain of a film, while the actors have the more glamorous job of appearing on screen to tell the story. These gorgeous and talented Hollywood stars are usually the ones that get all the attention. They’re the objects of our adoration and the ones that we obsess about and swoon over. But sometimes, directors are actually incredibly gorgeous too, and we don't even realize it because they aren't beaming at us from the big screen.
If you see a film in theaters, there’s no way for you to know what the director looks like. But if you love movies make it your mission to know everything about them and the people that make them, maybe you can associate those names with faces, and you know that those faces are very attractive.
We pay tribute to these stunning directors with this article. Some of these men and women also act, in their own projects and other films also.
Here are 15 Directors You Had No Idea Are Secretly Attractive.
15 Sofia Coppola
Not only is director/writer Sofia Coppola talented, she's really cool. She embodies the "cool girl" type. She has a natural beauty and a chic yet casual sense of style.
Coppola, who is the daughter of writer/director Francis Ford Coppola, is known for Lost in Translation, The Virgin Suicides, and, most recently, The Beguiled. In 2011, she wed Thomas Mars, the lead singer of popular French indie-pop band Phoenix. They're a talented and classy French-Italian power couple.
It's no coincidence that Coppola is very stylish. She interned at Chanel at age 15. She was friends with Kim Gordon and helped out on the cult X-Girl fashion line. She even started a line of her own, Milk Fed.
Before directing, Coppola acted in a variety of films from her dad's The Godfather: Part III to Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace.
14 Xavier Dolan
Xavier Dolan is a beautiful, stylish French-Canadian man. This young actor/writer/director has been making waves in gay cinema beginning with 2009's semi-autobiographical I Killed My Mother (J’ai tué ma mère). He has model-level good looks and an irresistibly hipstery style of style. Whether he's on camera in his films, wearing his hair messy and bleached-blond like in Tom at the Farm (Tom à la ferme), or rocking a blue suit on the red carpet, he is one good-looking guy.
As a writer/director, he gives voices to our angst, making not one but two films centered on a young man who hates his mother (the previously mentioned I Killed My Mother as well as 2014's Mommy). Plus, he has a whole other career as a voice actor, dubbing English films into French. He's voiced all your fantasy franchise boyfriends, including Jacob Black, Peeta Mellark, and Ron Weasley.
13 Patty Jenkins
Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins is a strong, beautiful, talented director. So of course she's the one that finally brought Wonder Woman to the big screen in 2017 to amazing financial success.
She broke onto the scene in 2003 with Monster starring Charlize Theron, which Jenkins wrote and directed. With her long brown hair and brown eyes, she looks not unlike Wonder Woman herself. Not to mention that winning smile, featuring absolutely perfect teeth. She always looks amazing on the red carpet.
Patty Jenkins is also making strides for women in Hollywood. Our hero is close to signing on to direct Wonder Woman 2, with Gal Gadot reprising her starring role. That deal will make her the highest paid female director in Hollywood. 2019 can't come fast enough.
12 Edgar Wright
You may be familiar with the expression "Get you a man who can do both." With Edgar Wright, it's more like: get you a man who can do literally everything.
This writer/director/Renaissance man has an instantly recognizable style and impressive resume of five beloved films that he's written and helmed: the horror comedies Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead, The World's End, the surreal video-game action/romance Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, and his most recent hit, the heist comedy Baby Driver. For Baby Driver, he built the movie around the music that his lead, Baby, carefully curates as the soundtrack to his work as a getaway driver.
Wright does all this, and he's also really cute. His English accent. His floppy hair. His scruffy beard. We would absolutely defeat seven evil exes to win his heart.
11 The Soska Sisters
Jen Soska and Sylvia Soska, also known as The Soska Sisters, are twin screenwriters and directors who make some of the most bloody horror movies of our time.
They're known as The Twisted Twins, and they have a style to match. These beautiful and talented ladies are total goth babes. They love wearing black, they look great in bold red lipstick, and they favor dramatic makeup and strong brows. They can pull off black corsets and red hair without looking like teens dressing up on Halloween. They are icons.
The Soska Sisters are best known for their films Dead Hooker in a Trunk, American Mary, and Vendetta. They also brought us the horror sequels See No Evil 2 and ABCs of Death 2. You can see them on screen as the hosts of the horror game show Hellevator.
10 Cary Fukunaga
Cary Fukunaga is a very handsome man. And the feature that has earned him the most attention is his hair. In the past he's sported long, jet black locks and was fearless when it came to how he styled them. He blew our minds when he sported man braids at the 2014 Emmys. He wears a man bun regularly. Even when his hair is short, it still looks amazing.
The director is known for the films Sin Nombre, Beasts of No Nation, and Jane Eyre. He also directed and executive produced True Detective and directed season one (aka the good season).
A man who appreciates the finer points of Charlotte Brontë's Victorian Gothic novel and one of the greatest love stories of all time? Yes, please.
9 Taika Waititi
Taika Waititi is an actor/writer/director who starred in the hilarious vampire comedy What We Do in the Shadows (2014), which he also co-wrote and co-directed with Flight of the Conchords' Jemaine Clement. His character, Viago, was a 17th century gentleman vampire. And oh boy, did he look good in period costume.
2017 is going to be a big year for Waititi: he's directing Thor: Ragnarok. He's also appearing in it as Korg.
He also played Thomas Kalmaku, engineer and best friend to Ryan Reynolds' Green Lantern in the 2011 film. You have to be hot to be in a DC movie. They don't just put anyone in those things.
In real life, he's a bearded silver fox who does things like wear pineapple Hawaiian shirts and make us all faint.
8 Lynn Shelton
Indie director/writer Lynn Shelton is super talented, hitting it out of the park in both film and TV. And she's pretty to boot. She has beautiful hair: long, flowing, perfectly highlighted. And she has an amazing smile.
She's written and directed two movies with indie favorite Mark Duplass as a leading man: Your Sister's Sister and Humpday. She helmed 2012's Laggies, starring Keira Knightley and Chloë Grace Moretz. She's also directed at least one episode of what seems like every critically-acclaimed show on TV in recent years: Glow, Casual, Love, The Good Place, Fresh Off the Boat, The Mindy Project, and Mad Men, and the list goes on.
Later in 2017, she'll be working with another Duplass brother: Jay. The pair have written a movie called Outside In, which Shelton will direct.
7 Zack Snyder
The director of Man of Steel (2013) and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) is a super fine-looking man himself.
Outside of the world of comics, Snyder wrote and directed Sucker Punch in 2011 and 2004's Dawn of the Dead. Snyder is a cute nerd who could be the boy next door. And look at his adorable dimpled chin.
Snyder also directs music videos, and happens to have helmed videos for two artists who like to really lay on the feelings: Morrissey and My Chemical Romance. Raise your hand if you want Zack Snyder to make you a mixtape.
6 Eli Roth
Horror movie writer/director Eli Roth is also an actor, best known for playing Donny "The Bear Jew" Donowitz in Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds. With his classic good looks, Roth fit right into a cast led by Brad Pitt.
Roth is particularly known for crafting violent and bloody horror flicks. He rose to prominence for writing and directing the horror thriller Hostel. His other films include Cabin Fever, The Green Inferno, Knock Knock (starring Keanu Reeves), and the upcoming The House with a Clock in its Walls and Death Wish.
In real life, it's no surprise that he is married to Chilean actress and model Lorenza Izzo. Roth also follows a strict workout routine and also has a love of fashion.
5 Lexi Alexander
Marvel director, martial arts champion, outspoken feminist, and totally gorgeous: Lexi Alexander really is the full package.
She rose to prominence in 2005 when she wrote and directed Green Street Hooligans, starring Elijah Wood and Charlie Hunnam. The London-set film explored the world of football hooliganism - the violent behavior that soccer fans engage in. She followed that up by directing Punisher: War Zone for Marvel.
In recently years, she has done more TV directing. She also dipped her toes into the world of DC, directing one episode of the CW's Arrow and another of Supergirl.
Before she became a filmmaker, she was also just casually a World Karate and Kickboxing Champion. She's also used her platform to speak up against sexism toward female directors in Hollywood.
4 J.J. Abrams
Can we talk about J.J. Abrams? Can we talk about his cute little nose? His hipster glasses? His curly brown hair? The man is a cutie.
J.J. Abrams created some of the best sci-fi shows of our time: Lost, Alias, Fringe. He also fosters other projects as an executive producer, such as Westworld. He has a presence in both the Star Trek and Star Wars franchises. He wrote and directed 2015's Star Wars: The Force Awakens and directed 2009's Star Trek and 2013's Star Trek Into Darkness.
But J.J. Abrams is a romantic at heart, because the first series he ever created was Felicity, the college-set drama starring Keri Russell and featuring a love trial that gave fans a lot of feelings. He manages to sneak sci-fi in there, though: the characters time travel.
3 Ryan Coogler
Writer/director Ryan Coogler burst onto the scene in 2013 with the indie Fruitvale Station. Two years later he took on the Rocky franchise with Creed (2015). Then he inked a huge deal to direct and write Marvel's Black Panther, which will bow in 2018. With just these three movies, he's made quite a name for himself.
With Fruitvale Station, he brought an important story to the big screen. The movie tells the true story of the death of Oscar Grant, an innocent Black man who was fatally shot in 2009 by white police officer Johannes Mehserle at Fruitvale station on the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system in Oakland, CA.
Now that Coogler's on the Marvel bandwagon, his will be a name movie fans should get used to hearing. Also, he's a cutie. He has soulful eyes. He looks good in a white t-shirt and backwards baseball cap while on set or a suave suit while walking the red carpet.
2 Sebastián Silva
Sebastián Silva is basically your dream hipster boyfriend.
Although best known as a writer/director/actor, he's also a painter and musician. Silva's best known for his films Crystal Fairy & the Magical Cactus (2013) and Nasty Baby (2015).
Silva, who is Chilean and openly gay, played a principal role in Nasty Baby. The film is about a gay couple from South America, Freddy (Silva) and Mo (Tunde Adebimpe), who are trying to have a baby. Their friend Polly (Kristen Wiig) volunteers to be their surrogate. He won a directing award at Sundance for Crystal Fairy.
As a musician, Silva has made records with the bands CHC (Congregación de Hermanos Contemplativos), Yaia, and Los Mono. He has two films forthcoming: Tyrel and Captain Dad, both starring Michael Cera, who also starred in Crystal Fairy.
1 Baz Luhrmann
Baz Luhrmann is hot and also mythical. His gaze is very intense, like he's both sizing you up and analyzing you perfectly in an instant. His sleek hair is more white than grey, making him not a silver fox, but a snow fox.
Luhrmann is famous for directing larger-than-life, glamorous, and highly stylized movies. He's brought us Moulin Rouge! (2001), Romeo + Juliet (1996), and The Great Gatsby (2013).
The Australian writer-director also has some beautiful muses. Nicole Kidman starred in Moulin Rouge! as the beautiful courtesan Satine and headlined the not as good but definitely very Australian flick Australia (2008), in which she costarred with Hugh Jackman.
Luhrmann has also cast Leonardo DiCaprio in two great roles from literature: Romeo in Romeo + Juliet and Jay Gatsby in The Great Gatsby.
