Every couple of days we seem to get a new promo character poster from Quentin Tarantino’s WWII revenge fantasy “masterpiece,” Inglourious Basterds, which will be premiering at Cannes in just a few weeks.
So far the only Basterds we’ve seen in the character posters have been the rough-n-tumble Basterd boys. Well today I am proud to present one of the ladies of the Basterd brigade: actress Diane Kruger (Troy, National Treasure), who plays German movie star / Ally spy, Bridget von Hammersmark.
Ooo la la.
From what I’ve been able to dig up, the character of Bridget von Hammersmark was inspired by real German actress of the time period, including Leni Refenshtal and Marlene Dietrich. Tarantino really is the ultimate movie-loving filmmaker. Every film he does seems to have a bunch of little winks to the cinematic past. And I for one, dig it.
For those keeping track, this latest (and loveliest) poster is the third Basterd character we’ve seen featured. The first two were Brad Pitt’s Lt. Aldo Raine and Eli Roth’s bat-wielding Sgt. Donnie Donowitz. But, as sure as I am that tomorrow is another day, we’ll probably have another Inglorious Basterd character poster for you real soon.
For now, what do you think of Diane Kruger as a Basterd? (An added bonus for you foreign accent snobs: Kruger is a German native, so you know that her accent is going to be on point.)
Inglourious Basterds hits theaters August 21, 2009.
