While top-down action RPGs are pretty widespread at this point, it's pretty hard to top one of the biggest names in the genre, Diablo 3. The Diablo series started all the way back in the late 90s and has been a staple in the video game industry ever since. Modern games like Path of Exile and Torchlight probably wouldn't exist without Diablo's influence and owe a lot of their mechanics and concepts to that original entry.

To honor the incredible achievements of the original Diablo game, Diablo 3 has an event called the Darkening of Tristram that happens every January. This event allows players to revisit all of the levels from the first game and even engage in battle against the same enemies and bosses. This is a great way to experience Diablo in all of its nostalgic glory, but in order to do so, players need to know how to start the event. This guide shows players how to start the Darkening of Tristram event.

Diablo 3 - How to Start the Darkening of Tristram Event

Diablo 3 Diablo

The Darkening of Tristram Event allows players to check out all kinds of fascinating aspects of the original Diablo game. Players will be able to acquire all-new weapons and armor types that are unobtainable in the core part of the game. There is also the ability to be able to defeat four of the bosses from the original game, which includes Diablo himself. Before players can do all of this though they will first need to unlock the way to begin the event.

The first thing that players will need to do is start a new game and set it to Adventure Mode. Within the first act of the game in New Tristram, they will be able to access their map to find locations on it marked with the words "Darkening of Tristram". This should lead the player directly to different cultists that will need to be taken out to progress the quest further. Once this has been done the player will eventually receive a marker for a hidden portal on their map. All they have to do then is travel to this portal and enter it to begin the Darkening of Tristram and explore the original game's labyrinth.
