A new teaser for Dexter season 9 previews the show's return to its murderous roots. Michael C. Hall's highly anticipated reprisal of the titular serial killer is set to bow sometime this fall. With original showrunner Clyde Phillips returning after his departure in the fourth season, fans are hoping the ten-episode limited series can rectify some of the mistakes made in Dexter's original series finale. Some consider the ending of Dexter's eighth season as one of the worst send-offs for a series of all-time, putting extra pressure on the upcoming ninth season to live up to expectations.

Hall is the only original cast member slated to return at this point, but the series has begun fleshing out the rest of its cast. Clancy Brown will play the main antagonist, with Jamie Chung on board as a true-crime podcaster. The series will take place in upstate New York after Dexter was last seen in the Oregon wilderness during the events of the controversial series finale.

A new video for the season via Dexter on Showtime's Twitter teases a return to the main character's true nature. The brief video zooms slowly in on an axe perched on a tree stump while Hall narrates the clip. Dexter can be heard saying, "There really is nothing like getting back to nature," before pausing and ominously teasing, "My nature." At the end, a new logo for the series is shown, with the blood-red Dexter logo entrenched in the snow. Check out the full clip below:

The Dexter revival will take place ten years after the events of the original series finale, just enough time for the dust to have settled. In the finale, Dexter Morgan faked his own death before fleeing to Oregon to become a lumberjack and leaving a wake of bodies behind him. One of those bodies was his sister's, Debra Morgan, played by Jennifer Carpenter. After being in a coma for some time, Dexter decides to take his sister off of life support and dump her body into the sea, just one of many controversial aspects of the series finale that had fans up in arms.

Unfortunately, Dexter won't be able to fix that mistake, but it will be able to tell a new story that can pay respect to the series' origins. Fans are hoping that this next season can give proper due to who Dexter Morgan truly is as a person, flaws and all. The above teaser certainly seems to hint that his murderous flaws will be on full display, but will he be brought to justice or will he escape once again? Dexter season 9 will likely answer that question and many more when it finally premieres in the latter half of 2021.
