Everyone’s favorite killer is on his way. Michael C. Hall and the rest of the Dexter crew were on hand at Comic Con 2011 to discuss the sixth season of Showtime’s hit series. At the same time, a new, full-length trailer also dropped, giving fans their first official look at what the season holds.
Since the end of season 5, it has seemed that Dexter has been on a non-stop marketing campaign – detailing the myriad ways in which the upcoming season will bring the titular character back to his roots and sharpen the edges, which may have dulled as a result of his (briefly) becoming a family man.
Season 6 is no reboot, however. There is still going to be plenty of new obstacles that Dexter will have to face – but in doing so, the killer may finally find himself on the path he was always meant to take.
As teased in last week’s promo, Dexter may be on the path of spiritual enlightenment this season, perhaps transitioning the concept of his dark passenger from insatiable need to doing good work for the man upstairs.
Hall suggests that the character’s interest in divinity may have to do with the fact that his son Harrison is now a little boy, and Dexter is looking to provide a different kind of guidance than was offered by his adoptive father Harry Morgan (James Remar). Hall says, “Dexter feels ill-equipped to provide [guidance], and as a result, is motivated to find ways to do that, including maybe giving him some sort of spiritual grounding, something Dexter has never really cared about, but recognizes his son might need.
The pursuit of enlightenment is not a journey Dexter will have to take on his own, though. Enter the season’s highly-publicized guest stars Edward James Olmos, Colin Hanks and Mos Def. Olmos will play Professor Geller, a scholar of religious history who may share a clandestine connection with Hank’s Travis Marshall. The journey, of course, would not be complete without a visit from someone of the cloth – which, in this case is Mos Def, an ex-con on a mission to set others on the path of righteousness.

Of course season 6 won’t only be about the new faces in Dexter’s life. There’s always the underlying threat that someone like his sister Deb (Jennifer Carpenter) or co-workers Angel (David Zayas) and Vince Masuka (C.S. Lee) will become privy to his extra-curricular activities.
Arguably the tensest moment of season 5 was when Deb stumbled upon Dexter’s kill-room while he and Lumen (Julia Stiles) were in the midst of removing evidence of their crime. Will this be the season that finally crosses that line? Showrunner Scott Buck says the odds are not in Deb’s favor. “Deb is very smart, but Dexter is smarter.”
Watch Dexter hammer his way through season 6 starting October 2 @9pm on Showtime.
