The wait for Dexter season 6 is almost over. In but a mere month, the highly-anticipated premiere is set to air. But there’s no need to wait an entire month to find out what’s in store for everyone’s favorite blood spatter analyst, as the official season 6 synopsis and photos from the premiere have been revealed.
In the Dexter season 6 premiere, entitled “Those Kind of Things,” time will have jumped a year from where the Dexter season 5 finale left off. With that, we will find Miami’s knife-wielding vigilante finally over the loss of his wife Rita, as well as whatever transpired with the whole “Lumen thing.”
Having returned to the familiar mindset from previous seasons, Dexter has, as executive producer Sara Colleton says, “…gotten his groove back”. Of course, just because a proverbial groove has returned, that doesn’t mean Dexter doesn’t have responsibilities.
Since it was previously revealed that Dexter’s step-children, Cody and Astor, won’t be appearing in this upcoming season (they’re going to still be staying with their grandparents), his parental responsibilities now fall on the preschool attending Harrison, who is now 2 years old.
Says Colleton of Dexter’s new-found paternal focus:
"There are things that he has to start thinking about with his son, and he's been keenly aware of what it is that he doesn't want to pass on to Harrison, namely his Dark Passenger, but Dexter has no idea what it is that he does want to pass on."
With that, let’s jump to the official synopsis for Dexter season 6 and see what exactly awaits us (and perhaps a hint at what Dexter is looking to pass on to Harrison):
The explosively popular DEXTER® is back with a vengeance for a sixth season of startling suspense and unexpected twists. It's been a year since last season's shocking and heartbreaking conclusion, and mild mannered criminologist-cum-grisly serial killer Dexter Morgan has come to terms with who he is. But his existence is shattered when he crosses paths with an enemy unlike any he's faced before. A delusional religious zealot with unflinching convictions, this new adversary soon draws Dexter into a dangerous game that could well end in disaster.
If the religious overtones from the season 6 promo photo (see above) and the official synopsis weren't enough of a hint, I’ll just spell it out for out everyone: Dexter gets spiritual. But don’t worry, he’s not going to skew to any one specific religion – Dexter just wants to see what else is out there, and how that may help him (and Harrison).
Unfortunately, whenever a serial killer enters a new arena, they always find someone that needs to be killed (enter Colin Hanks, Edward James Olmos and Mos Def). In the upcoming season, Olmos will play the illusive Professor Gellar, Hanks will play museum antiquities specialist, Travis Marshall, and Mos Def will play the one-time criminal-turned-spiritualist Brother Sam.
Without giving much away, circumstances bring all three men to the forefront of Dexter’s urge to kill – but who, if any, will survive.

For those who are weary of spoilers, perhaps you should avert your eyes, because there are quite a few spoilers contained within (including Dexter’s first victims from the upcoming season).

From the looks of it, the upcoming season of Dexter feels like it could be a true return to form – both in quality and in storytelling. Of course, that has always been the case (even with the seasons that haven’t been so well received).
I’ll suppose we’ll just have to wait to see… with bated breath.
