WARNING! Spoilers ahead for Dexter: New Blood.

Showtime’s Dexter: New Blood featured the return of a few familiar faces, but there are still several important original characters who didn’t come back that can appear in Dexter season 10. Along with bringing back Michael C. Hall to play title serial killer Dexter Morgan, Dexter: New Blood revived deceased character Deb Morgan as Dexter’s conscience and his son Harrison Morgan, who returned with a Dark Passenger of his own. Dexter: New Blood also featured cameos from The Trinity Killer and Angel Batista, Dexter’s old coworker from Miami who became instrumental in Angela discovering Dexter as the Bay Harbor Butcher.

While Dexter: New Blood season 2 has yet to be greenlit by Showtime, the company has been ambiguous about whether or not Harrison Morgan will return for his own spinoff series. Dexter: New Blood ended with the controversial death of Dexter Morgan, who was killed by Harrison after discovering he murdered his innocent mentor, Logan. The ending was fairly unclear about what would happen next for Harrison considering Angela let him run free, and it concluded without the satisfying answer of whether Dexter would officially be exposed to the public as the real Bay Harbor Butcher.

Some fans have lobbied for Dexter to return in order to change New Blood’s divisive ending, but Dexter season 10 would most likely involve Harrison’s journey after killing his father. Dexter: New Blood showrunner Clyde Phillips admitted he would be interested in returning for a spinoff titled Harrison, but Showtime hasn't confirmed that another season will happen. That said, if Dexter season 10 finally comes to fruition, there are plenty of important living characters from Dexter’s original series that could return to contribute to both Harrison’s familial storylines and the overarching plot concerning the ramifications of Dexter being revealed as the Bay Harbor Butcher. Here’s a breakdown of which original Dexter characters could return for season 10, and what their roles could be in the series' future.

Astor & Cody Bennett

Astor & Cody Bennett Dexter Season 5

The most significant characters to the story that didn’t appear in Dexter: New Blood were Astor and Cody Bennett, the children of Rita Morgan and half-siblings of Harrison. When Harrison appeared in Dexter: New Blood episode 1 after tracking down his father, many questioned why he hadn’t tried to find his long-lost older siblings when he was back down in Florida. Harrison was largely searching for answers about his past when he arrived at Iron Lake in New Blood, and Astor and Cody would provide insight about their mother’s death, and separation from Dexter. Astor and Cody also would be important in serving as a familial basis for Harrison, as the two loved Harrison dearly when they last saw him. With Dexter now dead, Harrison will likely be searching for the last family he has left, which would mean finally connecting with Astor and Cody in Dexter season 10.

Joey Quinn

While Angel Batista’s New Blood cameo was satisfying for many Dexter fans, one face that viewers were longing to see was that of Joey Quinn, Debra’s ex-boyfriend and the charming detective from Miami Metro. Joey was also one of the only Miami Metro policemen aside from LaGuerta and Doakes who genuinely suspected Dexter of wrongdoing, but his investigations into the serial killer were put aside at the request of Deb. Although Deb’s last words to Joey were that she loved him, Dexter’s season 8 finale never showed his reaction to her real death because the last time he was seen, he only thought she was braindead. Dexter: New Blood revealed that Quinn was still an employee of Miami Metro, meaning Batista’s discovery of Dexter as the Bay Harbor Butcher will still have a profound impact on the detective. Since Quinn had his own suspicions of Dexter all along, his return in Dexter season 10 would give more evidence to the confirmation of his old coworker being a serial killer.

Vincent Masuka

Vince Masuka Dexter Return

Although Quinn was always slightly suspicious of Dexter, Vincent Masuka never had any such insight, as he likely just figured the blood-spatter analyst was as odd as himself. Out of anyone at Miami Metro, Masuka worked closest with Dexter as the in-house forensics team, suggesting Masuka could give much more information about Dexter regarding the Bay Harbor Butcher case. While Masuka didn’t return for Dexter: New Blood, an Easter egg revealed that he was still with the department and was even getting married, though Angel being called up to Iron Lake may have ruined his bachelor party. Since Angel was coming all the way up to Iron Lake to investigate Dexter Morgan in New Blood’s finale, it’s possible he would recruit Vince to come up later and take a look at Dexter’s victims and the deceased Dexter. If Dexter season 10 brings back Masuka, he can prove his title as the Lead Forensics Investigator by confirming his old coworker as the Bay Harbor Butcher.

Lumen Pierce

Outside of Dexter’s immediate family and Miami Metro coworkers, the original Dexter character who would be most intriguing in an upcoming season is Lumen Pierce. Lumen was featured in Dexter season 5 as Dexter’s accomplice, as he saved her from being murdered by the Barrell Girl Gang before the two went on a vigilante killing spree to take out the remaining members. Dexter and Lumen then embarked on a significant romance after Rita's death, though it ended when Jordan Chase died and she decided to leave her murderous habits behind. Since Hannah McKay was revealed to be dead in Dexter: New Blood, Lumen is the only living person who knew that Dexter was the Bay Harbor Butcher all along but never exposed him or tried to turn him in. If Dexter is publicly revealed as the Bay Harbor Butcher, Lumen could return in Dexter season 10 to provide evidence of his crimes from what she gathered in their time together.

Jacob Elway

Jacob Elway Dexter Season 8 Return

While only featured as a supporting character in Dexter season 8, Jacob Elway harbored incriminating information about Dexter, Hannah McKay, and Harrison that could have landed Hannah back in jail. In season 8, Jacob was Deb’s boss at his private detective firm, who first became interested in capturing Hannah when Deb asked for his assistance. After Deb backed out on wanting to find Hannah and turn her in, Jacob still hunted her down, with his pursuit almost landing in her capture as she and Harrison were fleeing to Argentina. After cornering Harrison and Hannah on a bus, Hannah drugs Elway with a tranquilizer, thus allowing for their escape.

It’s unclear what happened to Elway after Hannah subdued him, but he remained one of the only living characters who knew that Hannah, a wanted fugitive, and Harrison had fled to Argentina. Although Elway didn’t know much about Dexter, he would be significant to Harrison’s future in Miami for Dexter season 10, as he could prod Harrison about information on Hannah’s death. It’s likely that Elway holds a grudge against Hannah and Harrison for eluding him, which could make him interested in pursuing Harrison further after escaping justice once again.
