Dexter: New Blood showrunner Clyde Phillips reveals his version of how he would have ended the original series. Phillips was the original showrunner of Dexter for the first four seasons and is being brought back to helm the awaited revival that will star Michael C. Hall, who is reprising the titular character Dexter Morgan after portraying him for eight seasons. The continuation will take place ten years after the season 8 finale and will feature ten episodes with a mix of new cast members and original Dexter characters.

For all of Phillips' tenure, Dexter was considered quality television for viewers and critics. However, many have argued that the series gradually dipped in quality, despite having some peak moments, culminating in the Dexter series finale that was almost unanimously despised. The show concluded with Dexter living in Oregon as a lumberjack after faking his death and leaving behind his son due to his sister's abrupt and tragic death. The finale was also the result of an underwhelming final season that saw Dexter quickly reuniting with his girlfriend Hannah, despite her previously attempting to kill his sister Debra and never being in danger of getting caught for his crimes.

In an interview with EW, Phillips shared how he would have ended Dexter in anticipation of the premiere. Phillips shares fans' frustration with the final episode and states the main reason for the revival would be to use the opportunity to fix the events that happened leading up to the moment as the stories became harder to digest. Phillips' original idea to end Dexter can be viewed below:

"My personal ending for the show was that he was going to be executed for his crimes. He's lying on the table and outside the window are all the people he's killed. That was just in my own head. I never pitched that to anybody."

Phillips has also condemned the original ending for the show, sharing the sentiment with fans believing that Dexter deserved a more conclusive resolution than what he wound up getting. His version of the series finale would probably not only have satisfied a larger number of viewers. It also ties in well with the tradition and themes of Dexter in a poetic fashion, with Dexter being executed in the same ritual that he would kill all of his victims.

With Phillips back in the driving seat for the ongoing revival, many are optimistic and hopeful that the season will bring justice to the legacy of the series. The multiple photos and trailers to tease Dexter: New Blood show hints of Dexter's Dark Passenger reemerging and has given viewers a promising glimpse of what will come of it. In the scope of endings, Phillips has promised and teased that the finale of this season will all but certain generate a blowup online. Dexter: New Blood will premiere on Showtime tonight, and it will be exciting to see what plays out.
