Warning: Contains spoilers for Dexter: New Blood episode 5.

In Dexter: New Blood episode 5, “Runaway,” Kurt Caldwell is fully confirmed as the runaway killer, and the show provides enough information to suggest that he's killed more people than Dexter Morgan himself. Kurt’s identity as the runaway serial killer was heavily implied at the end of Dexter: New Blood episode 4, but episode 5 directly showed him killing Chloe (Skylar Wright). Given that he has clearly been active in Iron Lake for a long time, Caldwell might just be the most deadly character to feature in the show.

It is established early on that Iron Lake has a long-term missing persons problem. However, Angela Bishop (Julia Jones) is the only one who seems to take the issue seriously. Molly Park (Jamie Chung) takes an interest and Angela notes that despite the high numbers of missing young women most dismiss the disappearances as simply being runaways who move on to another town and don’t want to be found. Kurt Caldwell’s serial killer MO suggests that he might be responsible for many, if not all, of the disappeared women.

Angela repeatedly brings up her friend, Iris, narratively implying that she was a victim of the serial killer, Kurt Caldwell. Given that Iris disappeared when she and Angela were in high school and Angela (based on Julia Jones’ age) is probably about 40, the killer has been active for at least around 25 years–longer if Iris wasn’t his first. After Kurt captures Chloe, he goes to the local bar and plays the song Del Shannon’s “Runaway” on the jukebox before asking the bartender, Tess (Gizel Jimenez), to dance. Tess explains that he does this roughly every two months, which implies that he is capturing a new victim every two months. This information means that Kurt Caldwell’s kill count can be calculated: one kill every two months is six kills a year, for 25 years that means that Kurt has killed roughly 150 people.

This number seems astonishingly high, but it is also surprisingly close to another serial killer’s kill count. Dexter’s pre-Dexter: New Blood kill count is a matter of some debate, with some fan counts putting the number at 138 (a number which includes Debra Morgan, who he took off life support), but Showtime has stated that the official number is 135. Including the first two kills from Dexter: New Blood puts those numbers at 140 or 137, still a little way behind Kurt Caldwell’s kill count. Fascinatingly, the two have likely been killing for similar periods of time. Dexter started in his teens, and while Dexter is 51 in Dexter: New Blood, he took a ten-year hiatus, meaning that his kills also spread across 25 years.

The choice to have Kurt’s potential kill count higher than Dexter’s but so comparable is intriguing given the context of Dexter: New Blood. Dexter admits that he is a monster (be it one that is evolving), but after being confronted by a killer who has been working for a similar length of time and with such a similar kill count, he might come to question how he relates to someone like Kurt. Likely, he will dismiss the concern by noting that his kills are people who deserve it whereas Kurt picks on the innocent. This could become a bigger issue given that Dexter has recently killed out of vengeance and Kurt will likely have his own explanation or code for his killings. Either way, it will give Dexter: New Blood a chance to explore the fact that Dexter’s murders are still evil and have him question whether he should continue killing.
