Warning: SPOILERS for Dexter: New Blood episode 4, "Father and Son."

Showtime's Dexter: New Blood has officially confirmed Harrison inherited his father’s Dark Passenger — which means some big twists for the series going forward. New Blood episode 4, “‘H’ Is For Hero,” finally confirmed Dexter’s suspicions that his son harbors the same demons, which opens up a complicated relationship between the Morgans. After initially exiling himself in Dexter's original series ending to avoid passing on his Dark Passenger to Harrison, the main serial killer now knows his worst fear — or greatest wish — has come true, and could have dire consequences.

Although Dexter spent the first few episodes of New Blood hoping his son was “normal,” episode 4 revealed that Harrison’s Dark Passenger has officially come to light. The episode began with Dexter getting an alert about New Blood’s Iron Lake High School going on lockdown, soon discovering that Harrison was stabbed in the stomach. According to Harrison’s story, Ethan was planning a mass murder at school and asked Harrison to be an accomplice; when Harrison refused, Ethan stabbed him. Claiming self-defense, Harrison cut Ethan in the leg and rendered him unconscious, whereas Harrison’s injury was relatively minor. Bringing back his forensic knowledge, Dexter realizes New Blood's teenage Harrison had lied, then theorizes his son stabbed Ethan to “know how it feels,” then covered it up to look like self-defense.

Confirming that Harrison lied and his Dark Passenger goes much deeper than expected, Dexter snoops in Harrison’s room, finding a straight razor. The razor blade is extremely significant, as it was the weapon The Trinity Killer used to murder his last round of victims, including Harrison’s mom and Dexter’s wife, Rita. Realizing that Harrison was “born in blood” just like himself, Dexter is surprisingly happy at his discovery instead of appalled. Like father, like son, the scene hints that Harrison is deeply traumatized from being found in a pool of his own mother’s blood as a baby, which is now beginning to manifest in an urge to kill. Dexter was also a teenager when he moved from killing animals to humans, suggesting now is the time for him to fully become Harrison’s Harry in New Blood and teach him the code.

In fact, as New Blood episode 4 continually hinted at, Harrison having a Dark Passenger is what Dexter always wanted deep down. Now, Dexter can finally be his true self around Harrison, believing his son has the same urges and will look up to him. Dexter already knows that Harrison has a sense of morality when it comes to his victims, surmising that Harrison chose to cut Ethan because he “fits the code.” If history repeats itself, Dexter will have to confront Harrison about his lies, soon teaching him the Code of Harry and how to avoid being caught.

New Blood also suggests that Ethan won’t be Harrison’s only victim in the series, especially since Ethan’s cut wasn’t fatal. What’s even darker is that the way Harrison cut Ethan mimics how The Trinity Killer murdered Rita in Dexter season 4 - severing her femoral artery. In order for Dexter to gain the trust and confidence of Harrison, he’ll have to reveal his own murderous past (and present), which will open up a whole new can of worms. Considering Harrison has deep knowledge of his mother's murder — having listened to podcasts on The Trinity Killer and even buying an identical straight razor — it’s possible Harrison will blame Dexter for Rita’s death. In fact, Dexter already blamed himself considering Rita wouldn’t have died if he had killed Trinity earlier. It’s been theorized that Dexter: New Blood will end with Harrison killing his father or Dexter sacrificing himself for his son, which now holds more ground with the revelation of the younger Morgan’s Dark Passenger.
