The upcoming Netflix crime drama The Devil All the Time has some new promo images aiming to get fans excited for the new movie. This film comes from director Antonio Campos and is based on the 2011 novel of the same name by Donald Ray Pollock.

Initially, Netflix’s The Devil All the Time was supposed to star long-time Marvel actor Chris Evans alongside Spider-Man actor Tom Holland. However, Evans later stepped away from the project and was replaced by his Captain America co-star Sebastian Stan. The cast of The Devil All the Time is full of other well-known stars, including Bill Skarsgård of It, Mia Wasikowska of Alice in Wonderland, and Robert Pattinson, who is currently also set to star in the next Batman movie.

Netflix released a set of promotional photos for the series with EW that give audiences a first look at The Devil All the Time movie. The images show the main characters of the film in various states of distress, with one particularly gripping photo of Holland playing the lead role, Arvin Russell, looking bruised and wistful. We can also see Pattinson’s character in a church and Skarsgård’s character praying in the woods, suggesting the film will have some overtly religious theming.

The Devil All the Time takes place near the beginning of the Vietnam War and will illustrate the intersecting stories of some very different people all living in rural Ohio and West Virginia. The novel’s story features a crew of unsavory characters, but primarily focuses on Arvin, who is orphaned after his mother dies of cancer and his father kills himself as part of a religious sacrifice. The promo article also includes some of Holland’s thoughts on the film and the serious material it covers. He talks about his appreciation for getting to work with Campos as director, saying, "I was really eager to work with Antonio because his previous films that I’ve seen are very raw. I guess it was the challenge of doing a different accent, playing the rural kid, a period film, a new director. Everything ticked the boxes for me."

It’s hard to tell right now just how closely Netflix’s adaptation will adhere to the original source material, but these promotional images promise a serious and emotional ride for viewers. Based on all the actors’ past work, we can expect some great performances. While it’s a shame that Chris Evans had to step away from the project, Sebastian Stan has also proven his skill in historical period films with the first Captain America film, so the role is in good hands. The Devil All the Time releases September 16th on Netflix.
