Where can Devil May Cry: The Animated Series be viewed online and is it on Netflix, Hulu or Prime? The first Devil May Cry began life as Resident Evil 4, which was intended as a radical departure from the survival horror roots of the series. Capcom ultimately decided it was way too radical a departure, but since it looked promising in its own right, it became its own franchise. Devil May Cry follows stylish demon hunter Dante, who travels to a remote island to battle monsters and throw around some quips.

Devil May Cry's focus on slick, fast-moving action and tongue in cheek humor made it a hit with players, and a franchise was born. While Devil May Cry 2 is considered the weakest of the bunch, prequel Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening is regarded as argubly the best. The series received a reboot with 2013's DMC: Devil May Cry, which had a story supervised by Alex Garland (Annihilation), but its redesign of Dante and the world surrounding him was met with mixed fan reactions. The most recent entry was Devil May Cry 5, which followed the continuity of the original series and was met with a much warmer response.

While a movie based on Devil May Cry has been rumored over the years, it hasn't yet come to pass. It would also be tricky for a live-action movie or series to translate the game's unique style of action. The franchise did receive an anime in the form of 2007's Devil May Cry: The Animated Series. This show takes place between the first and second games and features Dante having random adventures with his demon-slaying business, the aptly titled "Devil May Cry." The show ran for one season and can currently be found streaming on Hulu and Funimation in the U.S; it's not currently available on Netflix or Prime.

For non-Hulu or Funimation subscribers, the show can also be purchased from Amazon or iTunes. Devil May Cry: The Animated Series was produced by Madhouse - the same studio behind Black Lagoon and Death Note - and received good reviews for its action sequences. Overall, fans are split on the show, which features a more angsty take on Dante and the inclusion of a kid sidekick called Patty. The show's storylines also feel somewhat aimless.

When approached as a curio, there's some fun to be had with Devil May Cry: The Animated Series. In the meantime, Netflix is set to receive a new anime adaptation from Castlevania producer Adi Shankar. Shankar has also stated the new Devil May Cry will be part of his "bootleg universe," meaning the show and Castlevania could potentially crossover. There's currently no release date confirmed for the new Devil May Cry series, however. Shankar is also working on an adaptation of acclaimed video game Hyper Light Drifter.
