Castlevania producer Adi Shankar has provided an update on his Devil May Cry animated series in a recent interview. Launching in 2001 on the Playstation 2, Capcom's long-running action-adventure video game series is a fan favorite, with the latest installment, Devil May Cry V, becoming the top-selling title in the series. The series follows a demon hunter fighting back against the forces of Hell.
The Devil May Cry franchise follows the story of Dante, a smart-mouthed, cocky demon hunter who is the half-demon son of a human woman and the legendary demon, Sparda. Motivated by the loss of his mother and the supposed death of his twin brother, Dante runs the Devil May Cry demon-hunting business, with the series consisting of him facing various demonic threats that put humanity at risk. Shankar's Netflix adaptation was announced in November 2018 shortly after the renewal of Castlevania for a third season, but details had since been sparse, as Shankar picked up new projects. However, the producer has finally given an update on the series.
Speaking to IGN Japan, Shankar stated the scripts for the first season have been completed, teasing multiple seasons. Shankar also confirmed that Dante will be joined by fan-favorite character, Lady, as well as Dante's fallen twin brother, Vergil. Finally, Shankar praised Capcom for their collaboration, praising the company for their support and generosity, while saying that working with Capcom producer, Hiroyuki Kobayashi, was wonderful. Shankar also joked that none of the characters would be voiced by Chris Pratt, in response to the Guardians of the Galaxy star's recent streak of surprise voice-acting roles. "The season 1 scripts are done.. They are rad. I could not be more excited.. I can confirm that Vergil is in it, as well as Lady, and of course Dante as well. I can also confirm that Chris Pratt won’t be voicing any of the characters.. The entire team both from the management side and the creative side have been so incredibly supportive and gracious. Kobayashi-san has been wonderful, It’s seriously a joy to work with Capcom. Their character library is unlike anything assembled.”
Shankar's Devil May Cry is the latest in Netflix's list of animated series based on video games, following Castlevania's success. Fellow Capcom franchise, Resident Evil, received a series on the platform with Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness, while upcoming series based on League of Legends, and Tomb Raider, are in development as well. Elsewhere, Shankar is producing numerous other video game adaptations for franchises such as Assassins Creed, Far Cry: Blood Dragon, and PUBG.
From Shankar's recent interview, fans can begin to speculate on what his Devil May Cry series may hold. With the show already being planned for multiple seasons, it appears that Shankar is planning to cover multiple games in the franchise. Furthermore, with Shankar specifically mentioning the characters of Lady and Vergil, fans can assume his first season will be inspired by Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening. The third game in the franchise is a prequel to the original game, featuring Dante climbing a demonic tower to prevent Vergil from unleashing Hell upon Earth, with Lady also making her first appearance. With Shankar's work on Castlevania being highly praised as one of the best video game adaptations of recent years, fans are sure to be waiting with high hopes for Dante's adventures on the streaming service.
