Rumors of an announcement of Capcom’s influential Devil May Cry series were well-founded, with Devil May Cry 5 officially announced at Microsoft’s E3 2018 press conference. Featuring the return of what looks like Nero from Devil May Cry 4, the new trailer makes it look like the game is another bombastic and over-the-top third-person action adventure, in a series which often pushes the graphical limits of modern consoles over a rock and roll soundtrack.
Another thing the series is most well-known for is its tongue-in-cheek humor, and the new trailer’s repeated use of one-liners amid the bloodshed looks like it’s falling right in line with what fans have come to expect. Snatches of gameplay between the cinematics reveal multiple weapons, air-combos, and surreal vistas on which to fight Nero’s malformed demonic enemies, as well as a brand new, deadly-looking robotic arm.
Devil May Cry’s previous outing came courtesy of Ninja Theory — known for developing Heavenly Sword, Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, and the recent Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice — who designed an alternate interpretation of the Dante character in 2013’s somewhat confusingly-titled DmC: Devil May Cry. The worldwide reveal of this new trailer came during Microsoft’s E3 2018 showcase, and Capcom director Hideaki Itsuno announced that “Devil May Cry is back!” to one of the loudest moments of applause on Sunday morning.
