Solve Pokémon Mysteries In Detective Pikachu Trailer

advertising

The new trailer for Detective Pikachu offers a glimpse of the North American and European version of the game, which will bring the speaking, crime-solving Pokémon to English-speaking players later this spring. Great Detective Pikachu was a bit of an oddity when it debuted on the Japanese 3DS market last year, featuring a surly, talking version of the popular Pokémon that solved mysteries alongside a human companion. Even stranger, however, was the news that a Detective Pikachu movie was in the works, making it the first live-action adaptation of the long-running property.

Directed by Goosebumps helmer Rob Letterman and written by Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Alex Hirsch (Gravity Falls), the film certainly has the pedigree to be an out-of-the-box family film hit. The most exciting news was the recent word that Ryan Reynolds will voice Detective Pikachu in the film. Naturally, the character won't be as raunchy as Deadpool, but the latest trailer for the game shows sass is built into this detective.

The Pokémon Company has released the trailer for the North American and European release of Detective Pikachu, which will hit the Nintendo 3DS on March 23, 2018. Along with some gameplay footage that shows how the player will solve crimes, the trailer features plenty of Detective Pikachu showing off what separates him from his more adorable counterparts.

Though it's been quite awhile since the Japanese release of the game, there's a chance the new version will come with additional content. So far, details are slim but expect a lot more information to come soon as the release date approaches. When it comes to the film from Legendary Pictures, the game release will also serve as early marketing for the movie as fans await a first trailer. When it arrives, expect Pikachu speaking to be a big deal.

Of course, Detective Pikachu won't be the first time the Pokémon has spoken on the big screen. Fans were shocked when Pikachu spoke in English during the premiere of Pokémon the Movie: I Choose You! The moment was especially surreal given it wasn't baked into the plot the way it will be for Detective Pikachu. Still, expect plenty of confusion when a Pikachu cosplaying Sherlock Holmes speaks with Ryan Reynolds' voice.

We don't know much about the plot of Detective Pikachu the movie, but it will likely follow some humans in Ryme City who team up with the unique Pokémon. Along with the casting of Reynolds, Detective Pikachu has cast Justice Smith (The Get Down) as its lead character. Joining Detective Pikachu's human companion will be Kathryn Newton (Big Little Lies) as another live-action character. No doubt, they will all be joined by plenty of other CGI Pokémon in the movie too.
