Upcoming time loop-based shooter from Arkane Studios Deathloop has been delayed from May 21 to September 14. The title looks to combine gameplay mechanics from the developer's previous titles, mixing Dishonored's supernatural assassin gameplay with Prey: Mooncrash's multiple roguelike runs through a single environment. A Dark Souls-esque Invasion mechanic will also allows other players to hunt one another down as rival assassins, adding yet another layer of complexity to the game.

Thursday morning, Arkane Studios announced on Twitter that Deathloop's release has been delayed until September 14, 2021. Deathloop Director Dinga Bakaba and art director Sebastien Mitton personally announced the delay in a video and apologized for "the extended wait." The nearly four-month delay is reportedly being implemented to maintain the health and safety of Arkane staff due to the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as to ensure the quality of the finished product. The video, and an attached letter, end by thanking the studio's fans for their passion and excitement regarding Deathloop.

Deathloop is set to release as a PlayStation 5 console exclusive, despite Microsoft's recent acquisition of Arkane and all other studios owned by Bethesda parent company ZeniMax. However, the game's one-year exclusivity means that it will likely come to Xbox Series X/S after this period has ended. Arkan admitted that it was also surprised upon learning of Microsoft's acquisition of Bethesda, although it explains that the acquisition makes a great deal of sense. With Deathloop's release now pushed back until September 14, it remains to be seen when the game will make its way to other consoles.
