Developers from Lucid Games and Sony XDev have teased that PlayStation 5 exclusive Destruction AllStars will feature about a year's worth of post-launch content. The online game hits PS5 tomorrow, February 2, as a PS Plus freebie, promising a gameplay experience that looks to marry elements from classics like Destruction Derby and Twisted Metal.

Sony announced Destruction AllStars last summer during its PS5 reveal event. At the time, getting a read on what the game had in store proved difficult, since very little gameplay had been shown. The publisher later unveiled its plans of releasing the high-octane endeavor from Lucid Games as a PS5 launch title, complete with a $70 price tag. It didn't take too long for Sony to walk back these plans, however. As noted above, Destruction AllStars will now roll out as part of PS Plus' February 2021 offerings.

Speaking with Eurogamer, Sony XDev's John McLaughlin explained there are plans for the next year or so of content. Yet, the development team also intends to study player-related analytics and listen to community feedback, all in an effort to ensure that, as a live service, Destruction AllStars can pivot if needed. He then went on to note how the title's modularity will allow developers to "quickly turn modes into something new." McLaughlin told Eurogamer:

"So we've got a plan. The first couple of months is basically letting people play the game, get into the game, of course we're gonna look at the analytics and look at what people are playing. While we've got a plan for the forthcoming year, we've got loads of cool stuff coming, we do want to engage with that community, we want to listen to what they're saying. It's important for [live] services to be able to pivot, you know, and listen to what people are saying."

With classic PlayStation racers like WipEout and Twisted Metal sidelined, though the latter is set to return as a PlayStation Productions TV series, Destruction AllStars could be just what the doctor ordered. The absence of such experiences has especially been felt in recent years, since Sony-published racing titles of late center more on simulation-focused adventures and the like.

PS5 owners have more than Destruction AllStars to look forward to in the year ahead. The recently delayed Returnal from Housemarque arrives on April 30, for example. Eagerly-anticipated releases, such as Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Gran Turismo 7, and Horizon: Forbidden West are slated for this year, too, but presently lack firm launch details.
