The latest PlayStation 5 exclusive is Destruction AllStars, a demolition derby game from developer Lucid Games. It garnered some attention after being delayed out of the PS5 launch window and debuting as a PlayStation Plus title, a strategy that has worked well in the past for Rocket League and Fall Guys. As it stands, the game is pretty simple. There are 16 titular AllStars who compete in a sporting event that combines the vehicular mayhem of Twisted Metal with hero abilities akin to Overwatch.

Although more Destruction AllStars content is coming soon, the game currently has only four game modes, each involving 16 players. Two of these are free-for-alls - Mayhem and Gridfall. The other two, Carnado and Stockpile, pit two teams of eight against each other and are playable with friends. Each game has a different set of rules, but they all revolve around the same basic objective: cause as much destructive chaos as possible.

All 16 Destruction AllStars characters throw their unique wrenches into the mix, varying each match enough to keep it entertaining. Although the different character Breakers allow players to fine-tune their playstyle, there isn't one single AllStar who can sway the outcome of a match. In order to win a Destruction AllStars game, players are going to want to be familiar with each mode.

Destruction AllStars Game Modes - Mayhem

Destruction AllStars Game Modes Explained

Mayhem is the most straightforward of the four game types. 16 players hop in their vehicles and try to cause as much damage as they can. Points are awarded based on a number of things: hitting opposing vehicles, how hard that impact is, wrecking opponents vehicles, performing a takeover or Wreckover, and K.O.-ing another player that is on foot. The player who has accumulated the most points when time runs out is the Destruction AllStars match winner.

Destruction AllStars Game Modes - Gridfall

Players who have played the Hex-A-Gone minigame in Fall Guys (which was inspired by Minecraft's TNT Run) will be familiar with Destruction AllStars' Gridfall mode. The idea is to outlast all opponents in an arena where sections of the floor gradually disappear. Crash opposing vehicles or Barge a pedestrian opponent off the ledge, and they'll lose a life. Once someone runs out of lives, they're out of the game. Additional lives can be earned by causing damage to opponents.

Destruction AllStars Game Modes - Carnado

Destruction AllStars Game Modes Explained

Possibly the most inventive of Destruction AllStars' four modes, Carnado is a race between two teams to bank the most points by crashing their cars into the swirling tornado at the map's center before time runs out. It is just as whacky as it sounds. In Carnado, points take the form of Gears, which can be earned by smashing into enemy cars. Similar to Mayhem, the bigger the hit, the more Gears are netted. Bonus Gears are awarded for wrecking and landing a K.O., and Gears are tied to specific vehicles, so make sure to drive a nearly destroyed car into the Carnado before finding a new ride.

Gears can only be banked in lump sums. Every vehicle starts with one Gear, but trying to bank a vehicle that has earned two, three, or four Gears will only net one point for the team. Beyond one, the banking thresholds are five, 15, 30, and 50. Hero vehicles are able to get up to 80 Gears, so be careful and try to keep it running as long as possible.

Destruction AllStars Game Modes - Stockpile

Destruction AllStars Game Modes Explained

Stockpile is very similar to Carnado, but with a few differences. Instead of a tornado in the center of the map that destroys cars upon banking, three banks across the arena take the form of raised platforms. Points are acquired how they always are - wreaking havoc on opponents - but the Gears in Stockpile are only dropped when a car is completely wrecked, and they must be picked up on foot. Players will only be able to hold four Gears at a time before they will need to jump on top of one of the three banks to make a deposit. The game is won when a Destruction AllStars team either maxes out all three banks or controls a majority of the banks when time expires. Stockpile is the game mode that emphasizes the on-foot gameplay of Destruction AllStars the most.
