As Destiny 2 approaches its sixth year, players can expect more than just the Lightfall expansion on the horizon. Destiny 2 is leading up to its final DLC in year six, where the story of The Light and Darkness Saga will end. The penultimate expansion will be Lightfall, launching on February 28, 2023, and its four seasons of content. Bungie likes to keep much of its content plans secret until they're close to releasing, but some information about what players will receive this year has been made available.

Lightfall will take players to Neptune to discover the lost colony of Neomuna. This city did not suffer from The Collapse as the rest of humanity did, but it was cut off. Alone and without connection to the Traveler, they used their technology to prosper and create their own protectors, the Cloudstriders. However, the return of Destiny 2's Cabal Emperor Calus, now serving The Witness, has launched an assault on the colony for some unknown reason.

The Lightfall DLC will likely be just as big as - if not bigger than - The Witch Queen, coming with new weapons, armor, missions, and a raid. Destiny 2's Lightfall expansion will also be adding the first new subclass since Beyond Light. This new green subclass is called Strand and is described as the threads that mold the universe around the player. Year 6 of Destiny 2 will also include four seasons, each bringing a new seasonal story along with weapons and armor. A refreshed raid and two new dungeons will also be released over the course of Year 6.

Lightfall May Be Leading To The End Of Destiny 2

Year 6 of Destiny 2 will lead into the final announced DLC, with the franchise's future left unknown after that. It is unlikely the franchise will be abandoned, as Destiny 2's success proved Bungie rightfully left Halo behind, but it would be the start of a new story. Some recent technical bugs have begun to show the game's age, leading to speculation that the best course of action would be to move on to Destiny 3. If Destiny 2 does not continue after its eighth expansion, working title The Final Shape, Year 6 will be Bungie's last chance to wrap up any stories from this saga.

Initially, the Destiny franchise was supposed to have a 10-year plan, which is nearing its end. However, Destiny has become a huge success and ending the franchise after The Final Shape may be a costly mistake. Long-running live service games like Destiny 2 appear to be few and far between, but Bungie becoming a PlayStation Studio in 2022 could have altered the developer's future plans. Until then, Year 6 of Destiny 2 and everything coming with it will likely be a significant and memorable year for fans.
