As previously promised, today's Destiny 2 stream featured the first official details regarding The Witch Queen expansion and the Witch Queen herself, Savathûn. Bungie initially teased the broadcast in July, revealing the August 24 date as the time in which new content-related information would begin making the rounds.

Savathûn is no stranger to the expansive Destiny universe, having played a pivotal role in the brand's lore since its debut several years ago. Her first mention dates back to September 2015's The Taken King expansion, which centralized one of Savathûn's siblings, Oryx. Given the lengthy wait for her full reveal, it's no surprise that fans remain eager to learn more about the Witch Queen. Ahead of today's broadcast, though, Bungie made sure to unleash one more quick tease, a "Destiny 2 Showcase Event" clip that ran 16 seconds in length and featured the first real look at Savathûn, as well as the sound of her voice. Fortunately, fans need not ponder the possibilities any longer.

Amid the kick-off of gamescom 2021, Bungie hosted a digital Destiny 2 event packed with details about the eagerly-anticipated Witch Queen expansion. As detailed in a PlayStation Store leak, The Witch Queen will go live in Destiny 2 on February 22, 2022, according to the official reveal trailer. The studio's broadcast also confirmed Savathûn’s Throne World as the expansion's setting, a haunting place that bears its own form of beauty. A new weapon type, the Glaive, is on the way, too, set to provide fans with Destiny 2's only first-person melee weapon. Moreover, the upcoming expansion will unlock a weapon crafting system that allows for custom shader, mod, and stat combination options.

Needless to say, Savathûn's formal arrival in the Destiny universe has been a long time coming. She first garnered mention in 2015 with the advent of Destiny's The Taken King DLC, which starred one of the Witch Queen's two siblings - Oryx. Hints within the brand's expansive lore have continuously referenced Savathûn, but the February 2022 expansion will mark her coming out party.

Bungie originally planned to unleash The Witch Queen content this year; however, covid-induced challenges culminated in the expansion's delay. Fortunately, Destiny faithful don't have to wait too much longer to learn all about the enigmatic Witch Queen and her Lucent Hive.
