The Dawning event is one of Destiny 2's annual specials, and snowballs return this year with an additional benefit for players to take advantage of. Snowballs have been a staple in the Dawning event year after year since Destiny 2's first year. But, like Destiny 2 itself, snowballs have changed significantly from their first year. This year, players may want to turn to Snowballs to help them tackle one of Destiny 2's most challenging activities, Nightfalls.

Snowballs are also beneficial to players as they hunt down ingredients on Europa to bring to Eva Levante. Using Eva's Holiday Oven 2.1, players can take their vast array of gathered ingredients to bake something special and unique for each of the vendors throughout Destiny 2. The Dawning event is all about the celebration of giving, and the more players give to these NPCs, the more they'll get in return. With many unique rewards available, players will need to use every resource available to bake as many treats as possible.

First and foremost, snowballs are interactive piles of snow scattered throughout Europa and Nightfall missions in Destiny 2. When players come across snowballs, they'll see a few snowballs floating in the air with a pile of snow beneath the frozen spheres that is a bit lighter than the environment. Upon approaching the pile of snow, players can make a snowball to throw at enemies and deal damage on impact. Additionally, for the first time in Destiny 2, snowballs now deal Stasis damage alongside their normal impact.

How To Improve Snowballs in Destiny 2

Destiny 2 Dawning Event 2021

Having the ability to deal Stasis damage to enemies is huge in Destiny 2, especially on any Nightfall run. These snowballs are unlimited in use, and their Stasis effect allows players to take advantage of some of the Wayfinder's Compass mods available in Destiny 2. With the Focusing Lens mod, in particular, players will be able to deal more damage with their Light abilities to an enemy affected by Stasis. Additionally, by turning in 20 Dawning Spirits at a time, players can upgrade the power of their snowballs with Eva Levante. These aforementioned upgrades must be done in chronological order, and players can receive more Dawning Spirits by completing bounties and delivering in Destiny 2.

These are the order of snowball upgrades in Destiny 2:

  • Long Winter: Increases the duration of slow effects applied by snowballs
  • Longer Winter: Increases the number of slow effects applied to combatants damaged by snowballs
  • Longest Winter: Snowballs instantly freeze combatants damaged by them
  • Stay Frosty: Snowballs leave a Stasis mine on impact
  • Gift That Keeps On Giving: Shattering frozen combatants causes them to drop snowballs

These effects are similar to the Stasis effects applied by Aspects in Destiny 2 and should feel familiar to anyone who uses the Status subclass frequently.
