Some annoyed Destiny 2 players want developer Bungie to fundamentally rework the game’s Champions system. The studio introduced the high-level PvE activity when it released the Destiny 2: Shadowkeep expansion back in 2019. Champions are more powerful versions of certain enemies that show up in specific content, such as Nightfalls, Master Lost Sectors, or seasonal activities. The special bosses come in three varieties, and corresponding Destiny 2 Champion mods must be used to defeat them.

Bungie recently announced Destiny 2’s new The Witch Queen expansion, which will finally introduce the Witch Queen Savathun, the titular villain. The Hive goddess has been hinted at in the game’s lore since the original Destiny: The Taken King expansion, which starred one of Savathun’s brothers, Oryx. The Witch Queen is still a few months away from release, but the first encounter with the new primary antagonist will come during the newly launched season, which acts as a prologue for the new expansion and introduces new Season of the Lost weapons, artifacts, and more.

A Destiny 2 player named thelegendhimself shared their thoughts on the Destiny subreddit in a detailed post, criticizing the current Champion system and offering several potential ways to fix the system’s issues, balance it, and keep it fresh every season. According to thelegendhimself, rather than tying Champion mods to seasonal artifacts, Bungie should introduce an additional mod slot to weapons, theoretically allowing players to equip the Champion mod of their choosing. They justify this solution by explaining how the current system lacks flexibility and freedom when it comes to viable loadouts. The user adds that this approach could restrict certain mods for particular weapon types to keep players reasonably limited, and they say Bungie could adjust these restrictions each season to keep things engaging.

Commenters also shared their own ideas on how the Champion system can be reworked. One suggested Destiny 2 Ghost mods should be used instead of weapon mods, which would let players keep their loadouts and instead swap Ghosts when fighting Champions. Another took it a step further by proposing the addition of an all-new inventory slot akin to the one used for Ghosts, saying it would simply allow players to equip Champion mods to gain their effect.

Looking at all the discussion surrounding Champions, there are definitely more than a few players that want to see it changed. With The Witch Queen coming in February 2022, Bungie has a bit of time to closely analyze the feature and the feedback surrounding it if a rework is to be introduced with the next major update. For now, upset players will have to wait and see if a renewed Champions system will be included among Destiny 2: The Witch Queen's new features.
