Known as the Final God of Pain, Nezarec appears in Destiny 2's Root of Nightmares raid as the final boss of the destroyed Pyramid Ship players infiltrates to stop this Disciple of the Witness. An extremely tough opponent capable of wiping out entire fireteams in one strike, players must be coordinated to take Nezarec down. With Power Level 1770 being the recommended starting point for this raid, players will have to learn a unique mechanic throughout the fights before the boss and take on roles during the fight itself.
The Gardener mechanic shows up multiple times as a primary mechanic of the Root of Nightmares raid, demanding players grow a "seed" by connecting various nodes into a chain. Stepping into the seed field in a certain section of a battle arena lets players start building these chains by shooting the seed there. A buff named the "Field of Light" or "Flux of Darkness" is given to the player, depending on the nature of the seed, and needs to be brought to a node shown by a beam of light before returning to the seed field and extending the chain being built.
Best Roles For Beating Nezarec
At least two players need to be designated Gardener throughout the fight with Nezarec, building two chains on both the right and left side of the boss. Previous encounters in the raid should familiarize players with this role, but Gardeners must also be prepared to create safe havens against Nezarec's wipe attack. Meanwhile, two Tanks need to be drawing Nezarec's attention; usually, those with a good Titan build that resists damage against the debuff named "Nezarec's Hatred."
This aggro move by the boss applies only to those that shoot it in the chest, which draws Nezarec's attention.
The final role necessary for this boss fight are two Add Clearers, who focus on destroying the Colossus enemies and their minions that spawn during phases of the battle. Gardeners are typically under constant assault from these foes and could use all the help they can get from Add Clearers. Additionally, having a Legendary weapon such as the Throne-Cleaver in Destiny 2 that can wipe out swarms of enemies helps give Gardeners a clear path from seed fields to nodes across the battlefield.
How To Beat Nezarec
After either Tank gets "Nezarec's Hatred," they must shoot the boss in the shoulder to activate a large explosion. This energy blast either appears as orange or white, indicating where Gardeners must create a safe haven from Nezarec's wipe attack. For example, if the explosion is orange, the Gardener making a chain on the light side should build a haven on the completed dark side node. In contrast, white energy bursting forth means the Gardener on the dark side of the arena needs to make a haven on a completed light side node to protect their allies.
This process of building chains, shooting Nezarec's shoulders to draw out their debuff, and clearing enemies must be repeated until both chains on the light and dark sides of the stage are finished. Completing the chains makes Nezarec vulnerable for a time, as indicated by a large orange beam that strikes the middle of the arena. Unloading every ounce of DPS from every player will eventually take Nezarec's health down to nothing, as players finally beat this raid boss in Destiny 2.
