Bungie has finally removed the Trials of Osiris from Destiny 2 to combat cheaters. Bungie has disabled the mode in response to players cheating the system, punishing the entire player base by removing the game mode entirely, instead of the cheaters.
Destiny 2 is a free-to-play online looter-shooter from the legendary Halo series developers Bungie. Like Halo, Destiny 2 focuses on first-person shooting and taking down a variety of alien enemies, each of which has a deep backstory and lore. The game features both PvE and PvP elements, both of which reward players with loot and cosmetic upgrades. Between major content releases, Bungie runs seasonal events for players to stay engaged and entertained.
To announce the disabling of Trails of Osiris, Bungie tweeted the news on the Bungie Help Twitter account, stating that “Due to an issue, Trails of Osiris has been disabled for the remainder of the weekend”. While the tweet does not go into details, Bungie seemed to skirt the fact that the game mode is rife with players cheating. Instead, the developer stated that the PVP mode was disabled due to players gaming the system.
Sometime after the tweet, a Reddit post on the Destiny subreddit revealed that the tweet's issue was in regards to the Hakke emblem. The Reddit post has since been taken down, but user Ekser12 explains in a locked post how players had created a system using the Hakke Emblem as a signal to other players in the thread. Players who had equipped the emblem would enter into a deal, agreeing to roll a dice to see which team should win the game instead of battling it out. The team that lost the dice roll would switch to a Burned card on another character and surrender. Through this method, a team could make it through to the Lighthouse without a single kill to their name.
While this change is only temporary, it proves that Bungie is actually listening to its fans, stepping up to put a stop to cheaters instead of only fixing exploits that players actually enjoy. Recently a glitch caused raids to allow 12 players to participate instead of a party of only 6. Other glitches in the game have caused Strikes to allow up to 20 players to participate instead of just 3. Bungie has been quick to fix these issues in the past, all while dragging its feet on other game-breaking bugs for months at a time.
For those players who are still keen to play the popular looter-shooter, Destiny 2: Season of the Chosen is currently live, with new Strikes, armor and weapons to collect, and an all-new game mode called Battlegrounds. The next expansion for Destiny 2 has also been delayed until 2022, with Witch Queen set to be the exciting next chapter in the Destiny 2 storyline following Beyond Light.
