In Destiny 2, players will need to collect Legendary Shards as one of the main forms of currency. Players will regularly need these items to upgrade Modules and Masterwork materials as well as obtain items, such as Trials Passages. Additionally, players will need to collect Legendary Shards to infuse gear. Players will primarily obtain Legendary Shards by dismantling gear with either a Legendary or Exotic rarity.

The best method for experienced players to earn Legendary Shards in Destiny 2 is by clearing out their Vault. As players progress through the game, they may store weapons and gear in their Vault for later use, only to never return for these items. Each piece of armor or weapon can be exchanged for three Legendary Shards. Furthermore, players will be able to earn four Legendary Shards for each piece of armor or weapon if they are of high enough rank and purchase the Season Pass.

When clearing their Vault, players should prioritize any duplicate gear or weapons as well as any item that cannot be infused past the 1,350 cap. Because the power of weapons in Destiny 2 from prior seasons is capped, they are unlikely to be useful for late-game content or future seasons, making them excellent fodder for Legendary Shards. Additionally, huge stacks of Legendary Shaders or Gunsmith Materials can easily be turned into Legendary Shards.

Another method players can use to obtain Legendary Shards is redeeming vendor packages. Specifically, tower venders will grant players rewards as they increase their rank, and for each increase in rank players will receive a Legendary Engram from each individual vendor. Each Legendary Engram will always reward players with gear of Legendary rank, which can be exchanged for 3-4 Legendary Shards. To maximize increasing their rank with vendors, players should prioritize double reputation weeks during the season in Destiny 2.

Additionally, players may find Legendary Shards from Umbral Engrams. Players should be able to collect this dropped item from completing most activities in Destiny 2, but they do have a lower drop chance than Legendary Engrams. The best place to decrypt the Umbral Engrams to find Legendary Shards is at Rahool, but players can also focus them at the H.E.L.M. for a higher chance to find a specific weapon or gear.

Another way to find Legendary Shards is to visit the NPC, Spider. While this NPC will sell players planetary materials in exchange for Legendary Shards, he will also sell Legendary Shards for Glimmer in Destiny 2. Glimmer is another type of in-game currency that is used for acquiring better armor, weapons, mods, and bounties. At an exchange rate of 100,000 Glimmer for 20 Legendary Shards, players can make the exchange from Spider.

If players are short on Glimmer, they can select a short Lost Sector and farm it repeatedly. For instance, Widow's Walk can be completed in a few minute with the right set of gear. In the long run, players will be able to find Legendary Shards more easily than giving up their Glimmer, but visiting Spider is an option for those in need of Legendary Shards quickly for an upcoming raid.
