Universal Pictures will unleash its first 3D animated venture, Despicable Me, in theaters this month and we have just under eight minutes of new footage from the movie for you to check out.
Despicable Me finds the unaccomplished but nonetheless determined criminal mastermind, Gru (voice of Steve Carell), planning the most elaborate heist in history - stealing the moon. Naturally, an unforeseen obstacle arises in the form of three young girls - Agnes, Edith, and Margo - whose intrusion into Gru's life brings out the gentler, paternalistic side of the diabolical thief's personality.
Horton Hears a Who! screenwriters Ken Daurio and Cinco Paul wrote the script for Despicable Me, while Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs story artist Chris Renaud and animator Pierre Coffin handled directorial duties. The film features the vocal talents of several comedic types, the likes of which includes Carell, Russell Brand (Get Him to the Greek), Jason Segel (Gulliver's Travels), and Jemaine Clement (Men in Black 3).

The "bad guy gets in touch with his gentler side" plot of Despicable Me feels a bit like Shrek to me and the cartoony animation in this new footage is a step below the quality of Pixar's most recent work in Toy Story 3. Still, the humor seems decent - the jokes that involve fart guns and Gru's pants getting pulled down will go over with the kiddies - and I like the absence of excessive pop culture riffs. If nothing else, Despicable Me looks like this year's Monsters vs. Aliens - nothing particularly memorable or substantial, but a fun enough way to pass a few hours with your young ones.
What do you think? Does Despicable Me looks like a laugh-out-loud heist flick? Will you be seeing this one in 2D or 3D? Sound off in the comments section below.
Despicable Me arrives in regular and 3D theaters in the U.S. on July 9th, 2010.
