Demon’s Souls streamer Distortion2 has solved the mystery of the remake’s new locked door, which has vexed players since it was discovered shortly after the game’s release. While there was some speculation that developer Bluepoint Games could add substantial new content or restore areas cut from Demon’s Souls’ initial release, the locked door and the item it guarded are the biggest changes from the original discovered so far.

The saga of the Demon’s Souls remake’s locked door began just days after the game launched on PlayStation 5. Prominent Souls content creators like Vaati began posting about the locked door, which was hidden behind an illusory wall not found in the original game. Players immediately launched into attempts to open the door, or get by it altogether. That was the case with Distortion2, who found a way to get out of bounds and around to the other side. There, he found the corpse of a knight holding an item, but a massive invisible wall kept him from approaching it from any way except for the door.

Today, it was also Distortion2 who found the legitimate solution to Demon’s Souls’ new puzzle. Earlier in the day, players began discovering Ceramic Coins, a new item that could only be found in the remake’s Fractured Mode, which itself is only available after beating the game. With a Pure Black or Pure White World Tendency, players could find the rare items in breakable boxes. Members of the game’s community quickly connected these coins to the door, assuming that they were the key to getting it open. As Distortion2 says, the answer to the puzzle lay in trading 26 ceramic coins to Sparkly the Crow for a key. On the stream where he unlocked the door, Distortion2 speculated that the number was a reference to the 26 years that have passed since FromSoftware released King’s Field.

Behind the door, Distortion2 found a new armor set that players have been wishing for since the original Demon’s Souls’ release. The Penetrator armor set belongs to a boss of the same name, and it’s considered by plenty of players one of the best-looking armor sets in the game. After finding the armor set, Distortion2 proudly wore his new prize for a victory lap.

Devoted FromSoftware game fans are known for dissecting every element of the developer’s games, and it’s clear that that spirit has carried over into Bluepoint’s remake. While Distortion2 was the one who finally solved the mystery of the hidden door, finding the solution was a community effort from one of the most dedicated fan bases in gaming.

With the hidden door unlocked and the Penetrator armor finally uncovered, it remains to be seen whether Bluepoint Games has hidden anything else for players to discover next. There are rumors of DLC already swirling, though given the response from some players to any talk of changes in the remake, the idea of entirely new content may be out of the question. For now, players at least have an incredible new armor set to work toward in Demon’s Souls, if they’re able to overcome the massive challenge of acquiring it.
