An old variant cover depicts a demonic form of Captain America and fans deserve to see him in action. The cover was part of a variant series called Dark Variants and was released back in 2020. Patrick Zircher illustrated the chilling piece.

The book was written by Ta-Nehisi Coates as part three of his “All Die Young” story arc involving Sharon and Peggy Carter. Bob Quinn handled the interior art for the issue, which had nothing to do with Cap’s demonic form featured on the variant. The standard cover was illustrated by Alex Ross and has Cap in a typical action pose amidst a World War II battle.

It seems as if the characters featured in these Dark Variant covers were evenly split between retaining a human form and becoming something more demonic. Cap falls into the latter with bright, beady red eyes. The chain mail from his usual costume is still there, although it’s definitely taken a more armor-like appearance reminiscent of a medieval knight. This dark Cap still uses a shield, but his trademark star has been replaced by a pentagram. The five-sided star is right side up on his shield, yet it's upside down on his chest. However, the most striking aspect of the costume is its color scheme. He’s still draped in the American red, white, and blue. This means it would be easy to imagine a universe in which the United States still exists with its well-known colors, but the country as a whole has been “demonized” for whatever reason.

This demonic Cap appears to be an original creation, though there have been alternate and evil versions of the Sentinel of Liberty in the past. This Dark Variant Captain America is similar to Cancerverse Cap and the Cap from Age of Dormammu. He also gives off strong vibes from the alternate versions of Bruce Wayne seen in the DC Comics mega-event Dark Knights: Metal.

Other standouts from this Dark Variant cover series are a metal winged Dr. Doom by Ryan Brown and an eerily spiderized Spider-Man by Doaly. Marvel hasn’t announced any crossover between the characters or even a new set of these amazing variants, but fans undoubtedly deserve to see these crazy creations in action. Interestingly enough, the “dark” in the Dark Variant label on the cover is the same font and style as Marvel’s Dark Reign story arc, though there doesn’t appear to be any connection between the two.
