Throughout all the different films and television shows that make up the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there has been one thread connecting them all together: Stan Lee cameos. The comic icon has routinely appeared in Marvel properties (not just MCU) for a long time, and those appearances have spawned some interesting theories. Some consider him to be The Watcher in the MCU, but his multiple roles are really just meant as Easter eggs for viewers, as far as anyone knows.

Even when he is not physically appearing in the films or even in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., his face has still made a cameo in everything from Daredevil to the web miniseries Slingshot. Now, as filming continues on The Defenders, his latest cameo has been revealed thanks to a set photo.

One Reddit user has posted a photo from the set of The Defenders, featuring Krysten Ritter's Jessica Jones in good spirits. The context of the scene being filmed is unknown, but prominently featured behind Jessica is none other than Stan Lee's face on NYPD poster. While the entire phrase can not be seen, it looks as though the poster is tagged with a quote from Lee's police officer character saying, "Not all heroes where capes!"

Things You didn't know about Stan Lee

Some viewers may be disappointed to have Stan's cameo revealed already, but it is not surprising that this is the form it is coming in. Stan Lee's face can be seen on various fliers and plaques around the police station in the previous Netflix shows, so having him keep that identity for the purposes of this corner of the universe works. Plus, this is more than likely the same image used in the previous cameos, making it an easier Easter egg to include.

With Lee yet to make an actual appearance in any of the Netflix shows to this point, some may have hoped that a project as big as The Defenders would have been able to make it work. So far that is not the case, as there continues to be no word on Lee making a physical appearance.

As the Netflix universe grows, it will be interesting to see if it becomes more creative with Lee's cameos in the future. They very well could keep reusing the same photo in different locations with different quotes, but maybe one day he will actually get to interact with these characters. After all, the movie side filmed four of his cameos in a day, so with a little bit of planning, a larger appearance could possibly be worked out.
