After years of secrecy, Marvel has now unleashed the floodgates on their Netflix team-up series, The Defenders. It began with the first official images of all four heroes together for the first time, and since then Sigourney Weaver's villainous character has been revealed. Fans have been anxiously awaiting the team up of Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist since it was first announced.
In each of their individual series, these heroes have primarily handled issues alone, making Defenders the first time many will interact with one another. While it is already known that they will become a team, it doesn't sound like the alliance will go smoothly.
EW had the chance to talk to Krysten Ritter (Jessica Jones) about her character's role in the superhero collaboration:
"It switches back and forth, to be honest. No one’s best friends in all of the Defenders. This is a reluctant team-up."
Showrunner, Marco Ramirez added:
“She’s gloriously the most reluctant hero in the world. She’s going to have to let three men into her life who she doesn’t 100 percent trust.”
Ritter also went into detail about where Jessica is at the start of the show:
"She’s still dealing with the aftermath of Kilgrave, and now she’s dealing with ‘success’ - and not well. People want her to work for them, she’s getting a lot of business, and she’s not ready for any of that. She hasn’t changed, but her environment has, and there’s no handbook for how to exist in a world where you are now popular."
The idea that these heroes don't necessarily want to work together isn't surprising. Daredevil has been reluctant to accept help, though after teaming up with Elektra and Punisher at the end of season 2 of his series, he appeared to have turned a corner. Jessica only let Luke help her briefly, but both have tried to remain in the shadows. How Danny Rand deals with adjusting to life back in America remains to be seen, but he too could very well try his best to not let others get involved.
Surely there are some fans who are hoping that Ritter's comments about nobody being best friends is not entirely true, as the camaraderie between Heroes for Hire, Luke and Danny has been something many have been waiting to see. Regardless, the uneasy alliance should be similar to The Avengers, in which each hero ultimately realizes that they need the others to defeat their biggest threat yet.
Daredevil season 1 and 2, Jessica Jones season 1, and Luke Cage season 1 are now available on Netflix. Iron Fist will premiere on March 17, 2017. The Defenders and The Punisher will arrive in 2017. Premiere dates for the newest seasons of Jessica Jones, Daredevil, and Luke Cage have not yet been announced.
