This rap video will bring you up to speed on all things Marvel/Netflix, just in time for The Defenders, by recapping what went down in the previous seasons of Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist.
This is the prime time to swot up, as The Defenders dropped on Netflix this morning (at the time of writing this). Marvel’s long-awaited teamup brings together Charlie Cox, Krysten Ritter, Mike Colter and Finn Jones’ brooding heroes, kicking off at a time where Matt Murdock is ‘kind of lost’ and The Devil Of Hell’s Kitchen has been having some time off. The series looks set to have the traditional Netflix slow build pacing, with the central heroes not meeting up in the first episode.
In the build-up to The Defenders’ release, Netflix has treated fans to numerous Defenders trailers and a handful of Defenders clips (including one particularly tantalizing scene, which teases Misty Knight and Colleen Wing meeting up to become The Daughters Of Dragon). But the streaming service hasn’t released an official musical roundup of all the solo series that came before. The honor went to the fine folks at the YouTube channel Recap Raps.
Noticeably, the video doesn’t smack talk the solo adventures Danny Rand/Iron Fist as much as the critics did. Although it does mention that Danny looked homeless and crazy at the start of his first season, and it does throw a bit of shade at his glowing hand powers, the overall tone here isn’t one of criticism. This is just a fun way to refresh your memory of five separate seasons of TV, in under four minutes.
The biggest highlight of the rap doesn’t come in the Iron Fist section, though. The best bit has to be, during the Jessica Jones segment, when a clip of David Tennant shouting ‘JESSICA!’ in his surly Scottish accent is spliced in to finish a rhyming couplet. The throwback to ‘avocados at law’, in the Daredevil verse, also raises a smile. The Luke Cage rap is perhaps the least memorable, although that show’s official song ‘Bulletproof Love’ would’ve been hard to top.
Next up, Netflix has The Punisher wrapped and ready to drop, with a late-2017 release planned for that one. Jessica Jones season 2 is filming right now (with Tennant back on set), and may well debut in the first half of 2018. Daredevil season 3 and Iron Fist season 2 will have 23 episodes between them, and they should start shooting before the end of 2017.
The Defenders is now available on Netflix, with The Punisher arriving sometime this fall. Premiere dates for the new seasons of Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist have not yet been announced.
