Madame Gao has been a vital part of the Marvel/Netflix universe since the first season of Daredevil, and everything is coming full circle with her appearance in The Defenders now confirmed. Wai Ching Ho has continued to bring the mysterious and powerful Gao to life as the Netflix universe has continued. Following her debut in Daredevil, Gao had some time away before reappearing in Iron Fist earlier this year. Throughout her appearances, it has been her connection to The Hand that has continued to keep her in the forefront of the events in Hell's Kitchen.
There had not been any word on when fans could expect her to come back into the fold, but she was teased to play a role in the next part of Danny Rand's story. With the Immortal Iron Fist set to be a major piece to The Defenders, his Heroes for Hire pal has just confirmed that Gao will be joining the ride as well.
Mike Colter and Finn Jones were present at Comicpalooza in Houston this past weekend and during their panel, MCU Exchange reports they were asked which characters would be appearing in The Defenders. As they ran through the many characters shown in the trailer, fans began to shout Madame Gao. It was at this point that Colter confirmed her appearance saying, "We saw Madame Gao [in the trailer]. Gao’s in it."
The confusion here is that as those who have seen the first trailer know, Gao is nowhere to be found. Even though Colter says so, this is not the case, thus making this the first confirmation that Gao was even going to be involved with the series. As she figures to be a villain in the mini-series, she will join Sigourney Weaver's Alexandra and Elektra (Elodie Yung) as the primary antagonists. This also follows Colter's previous comments that the team-up will tie together the villains from previous shows. That said, with Gao's appearance previously being kept under wraps, there is no telling what other surprise characters could appear in The Defenders.
Outside of the four main heroes, the show has already confirmed the presence of a number of supporting characters. Defenders is clearly not lacking in the cast department, and with only eight episodes instead of the traditional 13, there is the chance it will be rapidly paced to include all of them or it could be overstuffed. We will have to wait and see which scenario winds up being true, but thankfully the wait is not too far away now. In either instance, the inclusion of Gao continues to raise the stakes for Defenders.
The Defenders arrives on August 18th, with The Punisher coming later this year. Daredevil seasons 1 and 2, Jessica Jones season 1, Luke Cage season 1, and Iron Fist season 1 are now available on Netflix. Premiere dates for the next seasons of Jessica Jones, Daredevil, and Luke Cage have not yet been revealed.
