The writer of Marvel's upcoming Defenders: Beyond series, Al Ewing, shared in an interview details on this upcoming grand cosmic adventure, revealing that the history of the Marvel Universe is about to change forever.

Defenders: Beyond is the sequel to the critically-acclaimed Defenders by Al Ewing and artist Javier Rodríguez, which saw a team of heroes led by Doctor Strange travel across the different incarnations of the Marvel Multiverse (the "cosmos"). This idea played on the cyclical nature of Marvel's cosmology, where every iteration of the Multiverse is destined to be destroyed by some great catastrophe, to be reborn anew and different. Current Marvel stories are set in the Eighth Cosmos, the one that followed the destruction of the Multiverse during the prelude to Secret Wars, and in Defenders the heroes traveled back all the way to the Third Cosmos. In Beyond, however, a new team of Defenders will go even further back, all the way to the Second Cosmos, unlocking secrets that will change the history of the Marvel Universe forever.

In an interview with CBR, Ewing revealed that a remnant of the Second Cosmos still exists and is somehow connected to the big villain of the series, the Beyonder, the antagonist of the original Secret Wars and one of the most powerful creatures in Marvel history. Regarding his role in the series, Ewing teased a connection to the mysterious Omega Council and their Concordance Engines that were introduced in Defenders vol. 4 by Matt Fraction and Jamie McKelvie. The Omegas are a powerful race created by the Celestials (the original inhabitants of the First Cosmos), when they colonized the Second Cosmos. The Omegas were created to be the Celestials' servants. When the Second Cosmos was destroyed, a group of Omegas survived and built devices called Concordance Engines to bind together all the most unique events they found across the Multiverse into one world: Earth.

The purpose of the Omegas' interference with Earth was to create the perfect environment where super-powered beings could be born and developed, in order to fight the Death Celestials, the destroyers of the Second Cosmos. This idea was used to explain why Earth seems to be always at the center of the most important events in the universe, and why so many super-powered beings appear there. It is an interesting concept that however fell by the wayside until Jason Aaron recovered it for his Avengers run, where it was explained that when the planet was young, a dying Celestial fell to Earth and nurtured the planet with his bodily fluids. This made the planet a breeding ground for extraordinary beings. It will be also interesting to see if Ewing will try to reconcile the two stories in his series.

The return of the Omegas and the Concordance Engines could have a major impact on Marvel's stories. The events of Defenders vol. 4 were explained as part of a divergent timeline, but the Concordance Engines should exist in every reality in the Multiverse, including Earth-616. This possibility has never been explored until now, and it is very likely that Ewing and Rodríguez will use this opportunity to take a deep dive into Marvel's cosmology in a unique and fascinating way, just as they did in Defenders. As a result, Defenders: Beyond will probably change fans' entire perception of the history of the Marvel Multiverse forever.
