Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas' new movie, Deep Water, has been pulled from 20th Century Studios' release schedule. Both actors have a bunch of intriguing projects lined up to debut in the near future, most notably Affleck reprising his role at Bruce Wayne/Batman alongside Michael Keaton in the upcoming DCEU film, The Flash. Fresh off her role as the fan-favorite Paloma in No Time to Die, de Armas will star in the Russo brothers' star-studded Netflix spy thriller, The Gray Man, and embody one of the most iconic actresses to ever grace the silver screen in Blonde, a chronicle of Marilyn Monroe's life.

One project that both actors have on their upcoming slate is Deep Water, an erotic psychological thriller based on the 1957 Patricia Highsmith novel of the same name. With a screenplay from Zach Helm (Stranger than Fiction) and Sam Levinson of Euphoria fame, the film follows Affleck and de Armas as a couple in a loveless open marriage who begin playing deadly mind games with one another that soon result in the wife's lovers turning up dead. After taking nearly 20 years off since his last film, Unfaithful, Adrian Lyne has returned to direct Deep Water. The film's impressive cast also includes Tracy Letts, Rachel Blanchard, Lil Rel Howery, Finn Wittrock, and Jacob Elordi in supporting roles.

Deep Water was set to be released on January 14, 2022, but unfortunately, the psychological thriller was just taken off the studio's theatrical release calendar, per The Wrap. Disney is handling the distribution of the film through their 20th Century Fox Label. As of now, it is unclear if the title will be rescheduled for a later date.

This isn't the first time Disney has delayed the release of Deep Water, as it was originally scheduled to be released on November 13, 2020. It was first pushed back to August of this year and then once again to January 2022, its most recent release date. The COVID-19 pandemic was cited as the reason for these various setbacks, though it is unclear why Deep Water has now been taken off the release schedule entirely. Still, the state of the pandemic box office can be assumed to be the primary motivating factor.

Affleck and de Armas recently experienced a very public break-up, though that likely doesn't have anything to do with the rollout of their joint star vehicle, Deep Water. The film's director has waited a long time to get behind the camera again, so it's a shame that his return has now been delayed indefinitely. Lyne has plenty of experience making 1980s erotic thrillers like 9½ Weeks and Fatal Attraction, so it will be interesting to see how he updates the genre for modern-day audiences.
