Although word is quiet on the Deathstroke movie front, actor Joe Manganiello says the character is still someone the powers to be want to happen. DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. have remained mostly silent recently on the movie potential, and Manganiello can't say much on if and when a Slade Wilson solo story will happen.
Deathstroke is one of those interesting DC Comics characters that straddles the line between villain and hero. He is a mercenary who is often the enemy of the members of the Justice League, but at the same time, he has been known to do the right thing occasionally. His version of the right thing, though, never really falls in line with what his enemies believe. Those enemies include Batman, Green Arrow and the Teen Titans. He is the result of a secret U.S. Army experiment that gave him super strength and powers. He became a mercenary and assassin soon after that. Deathstroke takes great value in his word, so if he says he's going to kill someone, he does it.
Although Deathstroke has already appeared on TV show Arrow, as portrayed by Manu Bennett, DC decided that the character deserved his own movie, one starring Manganiello. But since that report and the character's cameo appearance in the Justice League post-credits scene, neither DC nor Warner Bros. has said much about that film. In an interview with MTV at Comic-Con International, Manganiello was asked how he responds to fan questions about Deathstroke.
“It’s in the works. Because it is, and there’s nothing further that I can say without speaking out of [turn]. Because I’m a part of a team, I’m apart of a locker room and you don’t talk outside the locker room. But all I can say for the hardcore fans, it’s in the works. They want the character to happen. It’s just when he happens…”
Of course, there is no official word on when the Deathstroke movie might happen. Manganiello remained silent on that, but it is possible that filming could begin in 2019.
Deathstroke would fit well as a member of Lex Luthor's Legion of Doom in the Worlds of DC Universe. A post-credits scene for Justice League shows Luthor recruiting potential members for that group, including Manganiello as Deathstroke. This suggests that Deathstroke could appear in other movies in addition to a solo outing.
DC owes it to fans to take its time and get the movie version of the character just right. Fans are perfectly willing to wait to get the Deathstroke movie that they want to see in theaters, and it seems that DC plans on taking their time with the character.
Update: Clarified language around MTV's question.
