This article contains spoilers for Deathloop. The Goldenloop update for Deathloop recently added an extended ending which may lead into a sequel to Arkane Studios' time loop adventure. The unique first-person shooter puts players in the shoes of Colt Vahn, who must assassinate eight targets in a single day to break a time loop and escape the island of Blackreef. Upon release Deathloop was widely praised for its art design, story and gameplay, though some players were critical of the title's ending. Arkane Studios recently released a free update for Deathloop that adds a new power, weapon and extended ending which may be setting up another game.

While it initially released as a PlayStation 5 console exclusive, Deathloop has now launched on Xbox Series X/S and Game Pass. To coincide with this new release, Arkane Studios has also launched the Goldenloop update on all platforms. This free update makes various changes to the game to make Colt's violent daily routine even more unpredictable. The update adds the new Fugue power, which lets slows down enemies or makes them turn against their allies. A new laser gun called the HALPS Prototype will make combat more exciting, too, as will an explosive new enemy called the Paint-Bomber. The Goldenloop update also extends the game's ending, adding new scenes after players finally break the loop in Deathloop.

Deathloop's original "Break the Loop" ending saw Colt Vahn awaken on the shores of Blackreef only to be greeted by an ominous orange sky, implying that the island was brought into an apocalyptic future. The Goldenloop update's extended ending further expands these events with a lengthy additional cutscene. The sequence shows the eight Visionaries react to the fact that the loop has been broken, while Colt removes the robot 2-Bit from Charlie Montague's mansion. The final shot of the extended ending sees Colt and a group of Eternalists, with 2-Bit in tow, trekking across the desert bed of the now evaporated ocean. While many players found the original endings of Deathloop disappointing, the extended ending thankfully provides more context and may even tease a sequel.

Colt Heads For Another Adventure In Deathloop's Extended Ending

Deathloop extended ending

The original ending of Deathloop leaves Colt and the Visionaries with an uncertain fate, but the extended Goldenloop ending seems to be setting up another adventure. The strange orange sky and dried-up ocean suggest that an apocalypse has destroyed the world, with the time loop leaving the citizens of Blackreef unharmed. In the extended ending Colt seems determined to explore this mysterious desolate world, which is an amazing set-up for future adventures once they find civilization. Deathloop 2 could take Colt to a new city, perhaps with its own time loop, or perhaps introduce a brand-new mechanic. Upon release many fans noticed certain connections between Deathloop and Dishonored, so perhaps Colt's next journey will even intersect with the Dishonored story in some way.

Deathloop delivers a truly original first-person shooter experience, and the game's extended ending suggests that Deathloop 2 may be on the horizon. With Colt and 2-Bit setting out across a mysterious apocalyptic world, it seems inevitable that new threats will appear to fuel more first-person gunplay. Arkane hasn't mentioned any definitive plans for a sequel, though, so only time will tell whether Deathloop becomes a new franchise to succeed Dishonored.
