Hideo Kojima Explains Death Stranding's Naked Norman Reedus

Norman Reedus as the main character in Death Stranding

Few video game developers come with quite as much cultural clout and critical prestige as Japanese designer and director of the newly established Kojima Productions, Hideo Kojima, and his latest production in the form of Death Stranding is no exception - as evidenced by the much talked-about naked Norman Reedus featured in the project's enigmatic reveal trailer. Ever since the first Death Stranding trailer was released late last year, the entire gaming community has been in an uproar over each and every frame, shot, scene, and sequence teased from his enigmatic successor to Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.

Thus far, the promotional campaign for Death Stranding has been littered with puzzling visuals and recurring totems of uncertain symbolic importance. With starring turns from The Walking Dead lead actor Norman Reedus, Doctor Strange supporting player Mads Mikkelsen, and celebrated filmmaker Guillermo del Toro, the new game created and developed by Kojima is all set to be the center of significant attention and speculation as it continues to develop behind the scenes. The latest word from its director sheds some light towards solving the project's mysterious nature - including, why Reedus appears naked and stranded on an oily beach in the game's reveal trailer.

According to GameSpot, during an appearence at the Tribeca Games Festival this past weekend, Kojima was on hand to offer plenty of insight into the process currently taking place at Kojima Studios in the making of Death Stranding. Reportedly, Kojima and company are still experimenting with the title's core engine - meaning that the game is still in the early stages of development - but could be expected to hit store shelves as early as 2018. Little else is known about the specifics of the game's plot or setting, though Kojima did reveal that they are working on test scene in a New York diner - a scenario that will not factor into the official narrative - to explore potential dialogue between the production's main characters.

Speaking of those main characters, many fans are still wondering what Kojima had in mind when he introduced the game's lead actor Norman Reedus as a naked man stranded on an oily beach in the reveal trailer for Death Stranding. Speaking to the creative decisions and intentions involved in creating the now infamous teaser, Kojima explained:

"[Having Norman Reedus naked in the Death Stranding reveal trailer] is something I very specifically had in mind - I wanted people to see first a naked Norman. And then from there, you will be able to see him in different costumes, in different hairstyles, different equipment - and that's as much as I should say today."

After working with Reedus - as well as Death Stranding co-star del Toro -  previously on the ill-fated Silent Hills horror game, fans of the two personalities are no doubt eager to see what the two enviable talents will come up with in the making of their latest creative collaboration. Only time will tell how the new game will ultimately be received when it finally sees commercial release, but here's to hoping for the very best from Kojima and company.
