Former Metal Gear Solid director Hideo Kojima is working on a new project that may be related to the world of Death Stranding. Following a highly publicized exit from publisher Konami, with whom he had worked since the mid-1980s, Kojima became a free agent for the first time in decades. He re-founded Kojima Productions as an independent studio and got to wok. The result, Death Stranding, was his first full-length non-Metal Gear directorial effort since 1994's Policenauts. Released as a PlayStation 4 console exclusive, Death Stranding received a somewhat divided critical reception, but was nonetheless praised for its unique gameplay systems and impressive motion captured performances from Hollywood talent like Norman Reedus, Mads Mikkelsen, and Lindsay Wagner.

With Death Stranding coming to PC next month, all eyes are on Kojima and his team, wondering what they are going to do next. Rumors have pointed towards Sony or Microsoft acquiring the Silent Hill or Metal Gear franchises and getting Kojima Productions to work on that, but those rumors are as far-fetched as they are unlikely. Based on new information from Kojima himself, it looks like his latest project may be a sequel or spin-off set within the universe of Death Stranding.

Hideo Kojima fired off a pair of tweets hinting at the early stages of his new project, and the sleuths at ResetEra have deduced that it may be Death Stranding adjacent. Kojima's tweets show off a look at his desk, showing off artwork of what looks like a flying vehicle. It's labeled, "Landing Ship," and the ResetEra post believes it may point to space travel being part of the future of the Death Stranding franchise.

Like with all of Hideo Kojima's work, there is much speculation as to what this new project may entail. In fact, it might not even be a video game, as Kojima has recently expressed interest in pursuing a non-interactive project. There are many conclusions one can draw from the information presented in the ResetEra post, and all of them are impossible to validate. Will Death Stranding go to space? Will it even be a video game anymore? Only time will tell.

As a video game, Death Stranding isn't necessarily for anyone, but it provides a wholly unique gameplay experience with a story that has certainly inspired discussion and debate regarding its merits and meaning. Hideo Kojima and his team created a whole world of thematic storytelling for players to explore, and many players would be open for more adventures set within The United Cities of America.
