A new trailer for Death Stranding Director's Cut, revealed during Gamescom 2021's Opening Night livestream, has revealed new pieces of story content. The 2019 action title was developed by Hideo Kojima, the always-eccentric creator of the Metal Gear series. The PS5-exclusive Death Stranding Director's Cut, which will bring additional gameplay mechanics and story beats, was announced back in June.

Death Stranding Director's Cut is confirmed to bring a number of additions to Hideo Kojima's post-apocalyptic postman simulator. Stealth takedowns are being introduced to the game, serving as an obvious nod to the developer's iconic stealth action series Metal Gear. New weapons are also being added to Death Stranding, along with new modes and areas. A cargo cannon will allow players to fire cargo long distances, and a jump ramp can help to traverse over large gaps. A racing mode and a firing range will also help players brush up on their driving or combat skills, while Death Stranding's Very Hard mode will provide more of a challenge to those looking for one.

Gamescom 2021 Opening Night Live's Death Stranding Director's Cut trailer appears to show off several new story moments being added to the game. The Kojima Productions trailer ends with a never-before-seen moment in which protagonist Sam Bridges looks out of a mysterious doorway before a large flying whale approaches from behind. New cutscenes also reintroduce some of the Director's Cut's new mechanics, such as a virtual shooting range. Several new missions, such as one taking place within a mysterious warehouse, seem as though they might expand upon Death Stranding's story as well.

Despite the upcoming rerelease's misleading name, Death Stranding Director's Cut is not actually a true director's cut. While many films release director's cuts, which restore footage that was shot but removed from the movie's original release, Hideo Kojima revealed that cut content is not being restored in this edition of his cryptic game. Instead, Death Stranding Director's Cut is adding entirely new content to the game which was developed specifically for the upcoming release. Kojima himself proposes the name "Director's Plus" to describe the new version.

Death Stranding was an unusual action game, focusing on environmental traversal rather than combat, but many of Hideo Kojima's fans were pleased with the result. The game's story possesses many of the creator's usual staples, and the title's rich sci-fi world is grounded by exceptional performances from an all-star cast. While plenty of new gameplay content has been shown off for Death Stranding Director's Cut, many fans are likely anticipating any new morsel of Kojima-directed story content.
