Deadwood sure had a tendency to be combative. The David Milch-created HBO western developed a cult following over its three-season run (and subsequent film in 2019), thanks in large part to its colorful cast of characters, many of whom were based on real people from the actual 1800s Deadwood settlement!

Granted, some creative liberties are taken with the characters for the sake of narrative satisfaction. They each occupy a different position in Deadwood, with some serving the morality roles and others appearing distinctly immoral. For those who have strong ties to understanding their personality traits through the signs of the Zodiac, these are the Deadwood characters they most align with.

Aries: Dan Dority

Dan is portrayed by W. Earl Brown on Deadwood and he embodies the traits of the Aries sign because of how competitive he can be. His hot head often gets him into all sorts of physical debates with other citizens of Deadwood.

He's also quick on his feet in these battles, making him a perfect Aries. The moment when he uses brute force and cleverness to defeat Turner in a brawl is prime Aries behavior.

Taurus: Whitney Ellsworth

Taurus is a sign that is exceedingly loyal and reliable. Who fits those descriptors better than Whitney Ellsworth, Jim Beaver's character on Deadwood?

Whitney is a man of great experience in both prospecting and managing big personalities in town. Even when he loses complete reverence for someone, Whitney still keeps them in his life. That's the sign of a Taurus.

Gemini: Alma Garret

Alma Garret (Molly Parker) is a Deadwood character for whom fans cannot help but feel bad. So many terrible things befall Alma, but it is her Gemini traits that raise her above this barrage of tragedy.

It's something she's dealt with all her life, so she has learned to react with versatility and quick maneuvering. A clever woman, Alma is also profoundly curious. This curiosity (a true Gemini attribute) can lead to bad things, as well as good, though.

Cancer: Doc Cochran

Cancers are known for being protective of others, so it only makes sense that the local medic on Deadwood would fit the Cancer mold. More than being a doctor, though, Doc Cochran is just a good person.

So many people in Deadwood border on evil, but Doc uses his untouchable status to advocate for morals, even in the face of someone like Al. This makes him a pristine representative of the Cancer trait.

Leo: Al Swearengen

Speaking of Al Swearengen, Ian McShane's major Deadwood anti-hero is an easy, runaway choice for representing Leo. There is obviously a fire of ferocity within Al, who can be a cruel and viscous monster with an insatiable bloodlust.

He is also completely confident in himself. Even when Al knows he should be merciful rather than evil, it's still a choice made with the utmost self-assured vibes. This is why he is such an obvious candidate for Leo.

Virgo: William Bullock

Virgos are known for their gentle sensibilities and their tendencies to be polite. This seems like a good description of William Bullock (Josh Eriksson), the step-nephew/son (families can be complicated) of Seth.

William is a character who looks up to others, as Virgos are want to do. However, he also makes sure to set a domino effect of good deeds in motion when he dies because the world loved William so much that they dreaded the idea of his death being in vain.

Libra: Martha Bullock

Speaking of the Bullocks, Anna Gunn's Martha Bullock character makes for an undeniable Libra candidate. She is an incredibly kind and exceedingly forgiving figure in the unforgivable world of Deadwood. This aligns expertly with the Libra traits of being gracious and understanding of the actions of others.

It might seem like she lets people walk over her at times. But Martha would rather have it that way than being an aggressor in any situation.

Scorpio: Joanie Stubbs

Joanie Stubbs is portrayed by Kim Dickens on Deadwood and she absolutely represents the attributes of Scorpio. Scorpios are known for their passion, courage, and dynamic behaviors. That's Joanie in a nutshell!

Joanie's ambition leads to her climbing the ladder of status in Deadwood and she's never content to settle. A lot could have gone wrong for Joanie, but she always persevered and that's why she's a Scorpio figure.

Sagittarius: Calamity Jane

Robin Weigert brings the iconic character of Calamity Jane to life on Deadwood and, thanks to her Sagittarius traits, she's one of the show's most underrated.

Calamity Jane has a tendency to think in a cynical way, but she never believes the negativity that penetrates her bruised exterior. Her spirit always persists and believes in the best of people. That's why she's the best Sagittarius character on Deadwood.

Capricorn: Seth Bullock

It wouldn't be a Deadwood character list without an appearance from the main figure, Timothy Olyphant's Seth Bullock. The show's reluctant sheriff, Seth never gives up on what he believes is the right thing to do.

There are streaks of immoral behavior in him (even the sheriff can be susceptible), but he always makes sure to act with discipline and aplomb. That's why Capricorn is a perfect for Seth.

Aquarius: Cy Tolliver

Those who embody the traits of Aquarius embody an inflexible will and an unpredictable nature. Cy Tolliver (the late Powers Boothe) absolutely fits this persona because his character is always on a downward slope of madness.

The character of Cy is vastly different and more broken by the end of Deadwood's run, but he never sacrifices his iron will. He's an Aquarius through and through.

Pisces: Jewel

Of all the characters, Jewel (Geri Jewell) might have been the most emotionally wise and intuitive. There wasn't a whole lot of time for feelings on Deadwood before Jack Langrishe showed up. But Jewel always made sure to tune into her own emotions.

That's because she's a Pisces and Pisces are always known for being empathetic. And on Deadwood, empathy often came in short supply.
