The story of Captain America and the Winter Soldier is famous for its tragedy. However, Deadpool might actually be able to one-up the Star Spangled Man, because his equivalent of the Winter Soldier is even more heartbreaking than Bucky Barnes.

Thumper, a super soldier, is an agent operating within Department H's Project Daedalus. He was created to prevent agents from going rogue and effectively functions as a mindless killing machine, content to follow orders and carry out his purpose. Deadpool refers to him as "Canada's answer to the Winter Soldier," and he is correct: at his core, Thumper carries out the same missions as the Winter Soldier. However, just as Bucky's friendship with Steve Rogers had the tendency to interfere with his missions, Thumper has a similar hangup with Wade Wilson. Even after his brainwashing and reprogramming, Thumper still possesses a strange obsession with Deadpool, and every time he is sent on a mission, he ignores the objective in favor of tracking Deadpool down and attempting to kill him.

In Deadpool: Bad Blood #3, written by Chad Bowers and Rob Liefeld with art by Rob Liefeld, Deadpool makes the startling discovery that the man behind the super soldier is actually Miles Ellison. In a flashback, Wade thinks back on his childhood years and recalls that to him, Miles was "just your average little weirdo... and my best buddy." No one else at school was kind to Miles except Wade. Miles began to see his only friend as his idol, and he followed Wade everywhere. Miles watched as Wade was recruited for the program that would lead to him becoming Deadpool, and eventually it's revealed that Miles followed Wade into Weapon X of his own free will. All he wanted was to reconnect with Wade, but instead, he was experimented on and transformed into Thumper. Even so, he continued to forgo missions and track down Deadpool as his innate sense of connection bypassed his reprogramming.

Thumper might be Canada's equivalent of the Winter Soldier, but if anything, Miles Ellison's story is much more tragic than Bucky Barnes's. Bucky chose to fight in World War II of his own volition and for his own motivations, which resulted in his unwilling capture and transformation into the Winter Soldier. He knew the risks and still decided to fight for his country and against fascism, but unfortunately he received a horrific outcome. However, Thumper's decision to follow Wade into the Weapon X program was made simply because he wanted to see Wade again. Wade was the only person who was kind to Miles, and even as an adult, Miles wanted to be just like him. Weapon X took advantage of Miles's innocent intentions and transformed him into a mindless brute, trained to kill.

Currently, Miles's whereabouts are unknown, but Wade remained certain he would see his old friend again. Fans will surely wait eagerly to see how the next chapter of the tragedy of Deadpool & Thumper plays out, and if it will indeed continue to one-up the story of Captain America & the Winter Soldier.
